Vlll PORTICO Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Vlll PORTICO on Via Capo di Lucca, you immediately sense you’ve found something special. This four-star boutique property sits right in the heart of Bologna, and I mean really in the heart — you’re literally steps away from the medieval towers and those famous porticoes that give the city its character. The building itself has this understated elegance that feels authentically Bolognese, not trying too hard to impress but somehow managing to do exactly that.
Location & Neighborhood
Honestly, the location here is pretty much perfect if you want to experience Bologna like a local. You can walk to Piazza Maggiore in about five minutes, but you’re tucked away enough that you won’t be dealing with tourist crowds right outside your door. The neighborhood has this wonderful mix of traditional trattorias and modern cafes — I actually discovered some of my favorite spots just by wandering around the immediate area. Couples seem to really get this location (they rate it 9.1), and I can see why — there’s something romantic about strolling these ancient streets together, especially in the evening when the porticoes are lit up.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was thoughtfully designed with clean lines and quality materials that felt both contemporary and respectful of the building’s character. What struck me most was the attention to detail — from the lighting that actually works for reading to the bathroom fixtures that feel substantial, not cheap. The windows open onto the street, and while Bologna isn’t exactly quiet, the double glazing does a decent job of keeping things peaceful. You know what I appreciated? The air conditioning actually worked properly, which isn’t always a given in Italian hotels, even good ones.
Dining & Local Flavors
While the hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, this is actually one of those cases where that works in your favor. The staff here really knows their neighborhood — they pointed me toward a tiny osteria about two blocks away that I never would have found on my own, and it ended up being one of the best meals of my trip. There’s also a fantastic morning coffee spot practically next door where locals grab their cappuccinos, which beats hotel coffee any day. The breakfast situation is more continental style, but honestly, when you’re in Bologna, you want to be out exploring the food scene anyway.
Why Guests Love It
With a 9.6 rating, this place clearly gets something right, and I think it’s the combination of location and genuine hospitality. The staff actually seems to care about your experience — not in that overly rehearsed way, but like they’re genuinely proud of their city and want you to love it too. The property manages to feel intimate without being cramped, polished without being sterile. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying in Bologna rather than just visiting it, if that makes sense. For the price point and location, it’s honestly hard to find fault with much here.
Best hotels in Bologna blend frescoed salons, courtyard gardens, and tasting menus celebrating Emilia-Romagna cuisine.

This is a good sized flat with lots of character in keeping with the building in which it's located. It's on the first floor and I found it very quiet. The facilities are clean and modern with pretty much everything you could need including a washing machine for those packing light.
The bedroom is spacious with a large, comfortable bed and modern air conditioning.
The location is great, about 10 mins walk from the train station and a similar distance to the centre. There are bars and convenience stores just a few metres away.
Alessandro, the host, clearly goes the extra mile. He's friendly, quick to respond to messages and happy to pass on recommendations of places to eat and visit. There was even a good supply of snacks and fruit to enjoy during the stay.
All in all a great place to stay. Highly recommended.Great stop over location for Bologna sights – Hayden from United Kingdom – 8 May 2025 (10/10)
