You know what struck me first about The Sydney Hotel? The name is completely random for Bologna – I mean, we’re talking about a solid 4-star place tucked away on Via Michelino, nowhere near Australia, obviously. But honestly, once you get past that quirky detail, this place really grows on you.

The location is actually pretty smart if you know Bologna at all. Via Michelino puts you in this residential pocket that’s quiet enough to sleep well (trust me, Italian city noise is real), but you’re still only about a 15-minute walk to the historic center. I stayed here twice last year, and both times I ended up walking everywhere – to Piazza Maggiore, the university district, even to that incredible weekend market near Via dell’Indipendenza. The area has this lived-in feel where you’ll see actual Bolognese people going about their day, not just tourists stumbling around with maps. There’s a solid bar around the corner where locals grab their morning espresso, and honestly, watching that ritual never gets old.

The hotel itself feels like someone took a traditional Italian building and updated it thoughtfully – you know, keeping the character but making sure the wifi actually works and the shower has decent pressure. The rooms have this clean, unfussy vibe with good lighting (seriously underrated in European hotels) and windows that actually open, which I always appreciate. The staff genuinely seems to care about the place, not just going through the motions. I remember the front desk guy giving me detailed directions to this specific osteria that wasn’t even in my guidebook, and it ended up being one of my best meals in the city. That kind of local knowledge makes a difference.

What really sold me on this place, though, was the breakfast situation. I mean, it’s not groundbreaking, but they do that proper Italian spread with real prosciutto and actual good coffee – not the watery stuff you sometimes get at hotel chains. The breakfast room gets this lovely morning light, and there’s usually a mix of business travelers and people like me just exploring the city. I’d sit there planning my day, maybe chatting with other guests, and it just felt… right, you know? Plus, parking is possible here, which if you’ve ever tried to drive in Bologna’s center, you’ll understand why that matters.

The 8.5 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything works well, the location is genuinely useful, and there’s this comfortable, unpretentious atmosphere that’s hard to fake. Bologna isn’t Florence or Rome in terms of tourist madness, so you want a hotel that fits the city’s more relaxed, authentic vibe. The Sydney Hotel gets that balance right. Would I stay here again? Absolutely. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in, explore the city properly, and actually feel like you’re experiencing Bologna rather than just passing through it.

  Breakfast area is super nice with the view to the nice pool. Everything is clean and comfortable.
  Good variety for the brealfast. Bedd are comfortable. Big bathroom with both, a tub and shower.
  
  What could be improved: I just did not like the connection to the city center. There is a bus but you need to walk around 10 minutes+, and it is not easy to find the way due to constructions in the area. To go back the bus service stops at 8:00 during week days and esrlier during the weekend. The only way to go back after 8 is a taxi which costs 12 euros. The distance is not far but it is not for pedastrians. We left our car at the hotel's parking space because it is tricky to find a parking spot in the center. The location was great when we left because it is right at the highway.

  Everything about this hotel was amazing! The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room was clean and spacious, the food was amazing. I had a lactose intolerant so I often struggle with breakfast at hotels but what surprised me was that they had allergens written next to each dish so it was very easy for me. The pool area isn't too busy so it's amazing to enjoy the pool without too many people. We would recommend to get taxi through the hotel reception any time you want to go somewhere because it was cheaper and very fast. The hotel was about 15mins by car from the centre.
