Mercure Bologna Centro Overview
You know what struck me first about the Mercure Bologna Centro? It’s actually right where you want to be without feeling like you’re trapped in tourist central. The location on Viale Pietramellara puts you maybe a seven-minute walk from the train station – which honestly sounds awful until you realize this isn’t some sketchy station district. Bologna’s centro storico starts literally around the corner, and you can reach Piazza Maggiore in about ten minutes on foot.
The building itself has this sort of understated Italian elegance that works really well. I mean, it’s not going to wow you with marble lobbies or anything dramatic, but there’s something refreshingly honest about the place. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – clean lines, decent space (especially by European standards), and those little touches that show someone actually thought about what travelers need. The beds are genuinely comfortable, and the bathrooms have proper water pressure, which… well, if you’ve stayed in older Italian hotels, you know why that matters. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night, even though you’re on a fairly busy street. Good windows make all the difference.
Here’s the thing about Bologna that makes this hotel work so well – the city reveals itself slowly, and you need a base that doesn’t exhaust you before you even start exploring. From here, you can easily walk to Via del Pratello for that perfect aperitivo spot locals actually use, or duck into the Quadrilatero market area when you want to pretend you’re shopping for dinner ingredients (even though you’ll probably just end up at another osteria). The staff seems to get this too; they’re not pushing tourist trap recommendations but will point you toward places that actually matter. I remember asking about where to find decent coffee in the morning – not hotel coffee, real coffee – and getting directions to a place two blocks away that became my daily ritual. Small thing, but it’s those small things that separate a good stay from just another hotel night.
The whole experience feels refreshingly unpretentious. Bologna isn’t trying to be Florence or Rome, and this hotel isn’t trying to be something it’s not either. It’s just solidly good at what it does – giving you a comfortable place to rest between all that incredible food and those endless porticoed streets. And honestly? After a day of climbing the Asinelli Tower and eating your way through the university district, that’s exactly what you want to come back to.

Reviews of Mercure Bologna Centro
Great location, wonderful staff – Tracey from United Kingdom – 13 July 2025 (9/10)
Perfect location for seeing Bologna then catching a train to Ravenna and Ferrara. Great breakfast, room lovely and the staff are amazing!
What could be improved: N/AExceptional – Frank from India – 11 July 2025 (10/10)
The hotel was centrally located, just across from the train station. Excellent service from the staff and the breakfast buffet had a wide selection of options. Would definitely stay here again in the future.
Pleasant until checkout experience – Gizem from Germany – 10 July 2025 (9/10)
Very close to train station, able to refill water bottle from 1st floor. The room was clean and beds were comfortable.
What could be improved: During checkin, I was asked whether my card, that I used in booking.com, is physically with me. I thought that I paid the full amount as it showed as a pending transaction on my bank. However, at the checkout, there was another receptionist who asked for my card again saying that was only pre-authorization. There were no additional charges/changes to the amount. He took my card from my hand and put it on his desk checking the card details instead of using the payment machine. I asked my card back and when there was no response from him, I take it back from the desk in a second. I’ve stayed in different hotels in Europe and I’ve never encountered anything like this. I told it to the receptionist as well that I found such card handling unexpected and weird. To me, it’s unprofessional, unsecure and very suspicious.Superb – Lisa from Australia – 8 July 2025 (9/10)
Great location for bus/train station
What could be improved: Bed was hardSuperb – Harri from Finland – 8 July 2025 (9/10)
Good location. Friendly staff. Nice courtyard. Good lobby bar with plenty of different snacks.
Convenient and comfortable – Jill from United Kingdom – 7 July 2025 (8/10)
It was close to railway station and convenient for my purposes. My single room was plain and nothing to write home about in terms of ambience and decor but it had everything I needed: a very comfortable firm mattress, nice linen and pillows, spotlessly clean and quiet. The slippers provided were an unexpected bonus. They actually fitted unlike most provided by hotels which seem to assume you are size 10 feet, male or female. All the fittings in the bathroom were of a high standard. Shower was good . I had a very good rest for my train journey. The staff were very welcoming and helpful in recommending the kind of place was looking for to have a late evening drink in the historic part of town.
What could be improved: It was useful to be near the station but not the most lovely of areas to be in.
The decor was a bit bleak in my view… kind of modern but not very ambient or inviting.
It was expensive for a basic single room with no frills but I had booked only a couple days before and no doubt would be cheaper had I booked earlierSuperb – Clara from Italy – 6 July 2025 (9/10)
Great experience, hotel located in front of the station, nice modern hotel , spacious room, the staff had been amazing and efficient
Exceptional – Giancarlo from United Kingdom – 6 July 2025 (10/10)

What could be improved: Cheese cuts too thick for breakfast, boiled eggs were peeled so cold.Short stay, and confortable – Francesco from Italy – 2 July 2025 (10/10)
Room, cleanliness
What could be improved: Small window
