I mean, Via del Pilastro isn’t exactly where you’d expect to find a solid four-star place, but that’s honestly what makes it work so well. The whole area has this authentic neighborhood vibe – there’s a fantastic little osteria about two blocks down that the hotel staff will quietly recommend if you ask, and you’ll walk past actual Bolognese families doing their evening shopping instead of crowds of tourists taking selfies.

The hotel itself has that updated-but-not-trying-too-hard feel that’s getting harder to find these days. Check-in was refreshingly smooth (they had my reservation ready and didn’t try to upsell me on anything), and the lobby has these comfortable seating areas where you can actually work or just decompress without feeling like you’re in someone’s way. My room was on the third floor facing the courtyard – honestly, I was worried about street noise when I saw the address, but it was surprisingly quiet. The beds are proper firm (not that squishy hotel standard), and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that actually works well. Small thing, but the air conditioning was whisper-quiet, which matters when you’re trying to sleep in July.

What really sold me on this place was how the staff seemed to know Bologna inside and out. The woman at the front desk didn’t just hand me a tourist map – she marked specific streets for the best morning coffee, told me which markets are worth visiting on different days, and even mentioned that the Ducati museum is just a quick ride away if you’re into that sort of thing. There’s covered parking (which you’ll want to book ahead), and the breakfast setup is solid without being overwhelming – proper prosciutto, local cheeses, and coffee that’s actually strong enough. I stayed here during the shoulder season in October, and it felt like I’d discovered this little secret that business travelers and smart tourists use but somehow hasn’t made it onto every Instagram feed yet. For the price point and that 8.8 rating, it’s one of those places where you feel like you’re getting more than you paid for – and honestly, that’s rare these days.

  Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. We booked a junior suite, which was very spacious and comfortable. Lovely new bathroom and we really enjoyed sitting on the balcony overlooking the gardens and pool.

  What could be improved: Quite a way out of town and with a new tram line being built in the city centre it took longer than expected in a taxi. However, we think it was worth it.
