Santo Stefano Apartments – BolognaRooms Overview
You know what struck me first about Santo Stefano Apartments? The address itself – Via S.Stefano 88 puts you right in the heart of Bologna’s most atmospheric stretch, where locals actually live and work instead of just the tourist bubble. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Basilica of Santo Stefano (the “Seven Churches” complex that’s honestly more impressive than most guide books let on), but more importantly, you’re in this gorgeous medieval quarter where the porticoes create these perfect shaded walkways even in summer heat.
The apartments themselves feel refreshingly honest – they’re not trying to be some glossy hotel chain experience, but rather like staying in a well-appointed Bologna home. The 4-star rating makes sense when you see the attention to detail: proper kitchenettes with decent appliances (actually functional, not just decorative), comfortable beds, and – this matters more than you’d think – really good Wi-Fi throughout. What I appreciated most was the space; after cramming into tiny European hotel rooms, having an actual living area where you can spread out feels luxurious. The check-in process was straightforward, though I’d recommend coordinating your arrival time since it’s apartment-style rather than a traditional front desk setup.
Location-wise, you’re in that sweet spot where Via Santo Stefano meets the university district – close enough to Piazza Maggiore (maybe 8 minutes walking through those beautiful covered walkways) but far enough to avoid the evening crowds. The street itself has this wonderful mix of local cafes, small shops, and that authentic Bologna rhythm where things quiet down for lunch and pick up again in the evening. Honestly, some of my best meals were at tiny places within two blocks that I never would have found staying in the more touristy areas. The 8.5 rating feels about right – it’s not perfect (the street can get a bit lively on weekend nights, and parking requires some local knowledge), but it delivers exactly what you want: a genuine Bologna experience in a comfortable, well-located base. If you’re the type who’d rather explore a city like a temporary resident instead of just hitting the major sights, this place gets it right.

Reviews of Santo Stefano Apartments – BolognaRooms
Fantastic property. I’d definitely stay here again. – Mark from United States – 15 July 2025 (10/10)
Stunning property with an amazing terrace. We really enjoyed our stay there.
What could be improved: N/A. Everything was great!A great place to stay in Bologna! – Kliment from Bulgaria – 6 July 2025 (10/10)
We had a wonderful stay at this apartment! The building itself was great — although it’s on a busy street, the apartment and terrace face the opposite direction, so it was very quiet and peaceful throughout our stay.
The apartment was spacious, spotless, and well-equipped with everything you'd need, even for a longer stay. It felt very comfortable and practical. There are also a couple of nice coffee shops just around the corner, which made grabbing breakfast each morning super convenient.
Overall, we were really happy with everything — no complaints at all.Central lively location with great access to Bologna tourist spots but great cafes and shops at door – Kate from Australia – 12 June 2025 (10/10)
This is a superb location in a relatively residential area but with short walks to the key Bologna tourist hotspots, but it is the local parks and markets which we also very much enjoyed. The local streets have a vast array of excellent restaurants and shops so it is a great place to be to sense life as a Bolognese resident. Easy connection by bus to train station via multiple routes.
What could be improved: Additional kitchen equipment like glass wine glasses, chopping board and sharp knives would have been appreciated.Nice place to stay a night – Sevda from Turkey – 23 May 2025 (8/10)
The location if the apartment is good. Since Bologna is a small city, you can be in the center in just 20 minutes, we like walking, so it was no problem at all for us.
It was a large apartment, but I can say it was a bit stuffy and dark. Other than that, we had no problems, there was a coffee machine and necessary supplies in the room. There was a fully equipped kitchen, but you should definitely wash your dishes 🙂
I can also say that it was good in terms of cleaning.
I recommend it to those who will stay for a night or twoGreat apartment – José from Portugal – 17 May 2025 (10/10)
The studio was really clean, and comfortable. It's well located, and the public transport network makes it easy to go around Bologna. Would definitely book again.
What could be improved: It was only lacking shower gel, there was only shampoo. Which wasn't really a problem. for me because I brought my own.8/10 – Nice little place with a few little issues – Elleanna from United Kingdom – 17 April 2025 (7/10)
The room was very clean and comfortable. It was cool and spacious, with very comfy furnishings. The bathroom was clean and the shower had veyr good pressure. The location was about 15 minutes out of the main square so away from the city noise but still feeling nearby. Quick and easy check in and check out, with easy to use luggage storage.
What could be improved: One of the plug sockets was hanging off the wall, which was dangerous. Additionally, we did not recieve the 'kitchen welcome pack' that was promised, and thus did not get any coffee pods for the machine. Upstairs neighbours were also very loud.Vakantie – Duygu from Turkey – 17 April 2025 (8/10)
The appartment was oke, comfy and near by the metropole center of Bologna. But the other guests makes to much noise in the night. We haven’t sleep well that was the problem. Otherwise the appartment was oke thank you
Fantastic place for a mother and daughter weekend. – Helena from Sweden – 11 April 2025 (10/10)
It was really easy to communicate with the staff via Whatsapp. The terrasse was amazing. The neighbourhood the best. Equipment was very good also.
What could be improved: I was a bit nervous at first because messages kept coming in from different senders, check-in had another name than the others. In these times with a lot of frauds these things are stressfull.
I travelled with my 85 year old mother and I needed to cross her bedroom in order to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night – good to know if use the extrabed.Exceptional – Bogdan-lucian from Denmark – 24 March 2025 (10/10)
The apartments were wonderful and I had the best sleep.
What could be improved: ~We loved the apartment, it was easy to check-in, great location, very clean. Will stay again! – Georgia from Italy – 14 March 2025 (10/10)
Self check-in was seamless as it had been well described. The apartment was easy to find and instructions were easy to follow.
What could be improved: The apartment was fantastic. It was a great size, very convenient location and very clean. The only minor change would be to have a slightly more convenient located mirror as the bathroom mirror is set quite far back.
