Residenza Irnerio Overview

You know what struck me first about Residenza Irnerio? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street that feels completely removed from the tourist chaos, but you’re actually just a few minutes’ walk from the university district. I mean, Via Irnerio runs right through one of Bologna’s most authentic neighborhoods – you’ve got locals grabbing their morning coffee at the corner bar, students cycling past with overstuffed backpacks, and that genuine Bologna rhythm that you miss when you’re stuck near the main squares.

The building itself has this understated elegance that’s so typically Bolognese. It’s not trying to wow you with marble lobbies or whatever, but there’s something really satisfying about the way they’ve restored it. The rooms are honestly more spacious than I expected – Bologna’s old buildings can be pretty cramped, but whoever designed this place knew how to work with the bones of the structure. The bathrooms are modern without being sterile, and I loved that they kept some of the original architectural details. You can actually open the windows properly (not a given in Italian hotels, trust me) and on the upper floors, you get these glimpses of the city’s famous towers in the distance. The beds are proper comfortable too, which matters when you’ve been walking on cobblestones all day.

What really sets this place apart is the neighborhood feel. You’re about a ten-minute stroll to Piazza Maggiore, but honestly, some of my favorite discoveries were right around the corner. There’s this incredible osteria called Osteria del Sole just down the street – it’s one of those places where locals bring their own food but the wine flows freely and everyone ends up talking. The morning market on Via Ugo Bassi is close enough that you can hear the vendors setting up if you’re an early riser, and the walk there becomes this little ritual where you start to feel like you actually live in Bologna, not just visiting it. Parking can be tricky in this area (welcome to Italian cities), but the staff actually knows the neighborhood well enough to give you real advice, not just vague directions to the nearest garage. The 8.3 rating makes sense – it’s not flashy enough to be a 9, but it delivers on everything that actually matters when you’re trying to experience a city properly. If you want to feel like you’re staying in Bologna rather than just sleeping there, this is your spot.

Reviews of Residenza Irnerio

  • Good apartment – Ian from United Kingdom – 22 May 2025 (10/10)

Spacious, secure and quiet apartment. In a location close to train station and old centre. Good communication from host. Kitchen well equipped. Apartment in a residential complex has a lift but there are a few steps to reach it. Close to a park which has a mellow cafe.

What could be improved: It was all good

  • Excellent location – Sudhir from India – 29 April 2025 (9/10)

Excellent location. Apartment in a building. Very Safe. Good kitchen facilities. Washing machine present.

What could be improved: No Dishwasher. Very less towels n toiletories.

  • Very good – Albertus from Switzerland – 17 April 2025 (8/10)

Great location, a short walk from the old town makes it very easy to visit Bologna. The property was as expected, not luxurious but clean and good.

What could be improved: Something that is a minus but certainly not the fault of the property is that one can hear a busy road also in the evening. At night the road gets calm though.

  • Very good – Brock from Portugal – 16 March 2025 (8/10)

  • Very good – Cuong from Australia – 17 September 2024 (8/10)

    Fully stocked kitchen was handy.
    Spacious rooms

What could be improved: Emanuel on check-in was cold and did not provide the code for front gate access after 9 pm.
Faulty hot water was not handled professionally.
Surely, a few decent pillows should be provided.

  • Nice apartment in oknlocation and building with modern amenities and nice host – Luciano from Australia – 30 June 2024 (7/10)

Great check in and host was good. Updated apartment with modern bathroom. Very large bedroom. Air conditioned. Elevator helpful. Secure and easy use keys. Lots of windows. Washing machine good with drying rack.

What could be improved: Location wasn’t great with bar downstairs which was noisy at night. Living room small with sofa bed pulled out. Old violating. Strange entrance with many doors.
