You know what struck me first about Santa Croce Apartments? It’s tucked away on this quiet side street in Saragozza where you can actually hear yourself think – which, if you’ve spent any time in Bologna’s city center, you’ll appreciate. The building itself has that understated Italian elegance thing going on, not flashy but definitely well-maintained. I mean, you’re literally a 10-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but somehow Via Santa Croce feels like a different world entirely.

The apartments themselves are honestly better than I expected from the photos. These aren’t your typical cramped European hotel rooms – there’s actually space to spread out, and the kitchenettes are properly functional (I made pasta twice, because… Bologna). The furnishings feel contemporary without trying too hard, and whoever designed the bathrooms clearly understood that travelers need decent water pressure and storage space. What really got me was the attention to small details – good lighting for reading, enough outlets near the bed, windows that actually open wide enough to let in that morning air from the courtyard. The soundproofing is solid too, which matters because even though it’s quiet, you’re still in a city where people live their lives at full volume.

Here’s the thing about the location that booking sites don’t really capture – you’re in this sweet spot between the university area and the historic center. There’s a little alimentari around the corner where the owner remembers your face after two visits, and you can walk to Santo Stefano in about eight minutes through these narrow streets that feel properly medieval. The 9.2 rating makes sense when you consider it’s not trying to be everything to everyone. It’s just… comfortable in the best possible way. Sure, if you’re looking for a pool or concierge service, look elsewhere, but if you want to feel like you’re actually staying in Bologna rather than just visiting it, this place gets it right. Plus, and this is sort of random but matters – the check-in was refreshingly straightforward, none of that awkward standing around while they explain seventeen different amenities you’ll never use.

  The apartment is excellent: well located in a quiet neighborhood but very closed to the center, spacious and comfortable. Also, fully equipped with everything you could need.
