Casa Isolani Luxury Rooms Piazza Maggiore 1 Overview

You know what’s funny about Bologna? Everyone talks about the food and the university, but they sleep on the fact that this city has some of the most gorgeous medieval architecture in Italy – and Casa Isolani sits right in the heart of it all. I mean, when I say “right in the heart,” I’m talking about a two-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore, where you can grab your morning espresso at the same café where locals have been arguing about politics for decades. The hotel itself is tucked on Via D’Azeglio, which honestly feels like a bit of a hidden gem since most tourists stick to the main drags.

The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a place calling itself “luxury” – well, mostly. They’ve got that perfect balance of old-world charm and modern comfort that’s actually hard to pull off. The ceilings are high enough to make you feel fancy, but not so cavernous that you’re cranking the heat all night. What really got me was the attention to detail in the furnishings – actual antique pieces mixed with contemporary stuff that doesn’t look like it came from a hotel catalog. The bathrooms are legitimately beautiful (marble that feels substantial, not thin), though I’ll be honest, the water pressure varies depending on which floor you’re on. The WiFi is solid, which matters more than people admit when you’re trying to navigate Bologna’s maze of porticoes or figure out which osteria actually serves decent tortellini.

Here’s the thing about staying this close to Piazza Maggiore – you’re essentially living like a local, but with housekeeping service. Saturday mornings, you’ll wake up to the sounds of the market setting up, and by evening, you can wander over to watch the sunset hit the basilica in a way that makes you understand why people have been living in this spot for literally a thousand years. The staff actually knows the neighborhood (shocking, I know) and can point you toward places that aren’t in your guidebook. They told me about this little wine bar on Via Pescherie Vecchie that I never would have found otherwise. Parking is… well, it’s Bologna, so forget about driving if you can help it, but the train station is close enough that you can walk with luggage if you’re not overpacking. The 9.3 rating honestly makes sense – this place gets the fundamentals right without trying too hard to impress you with gimmicks. It’s the kind of hotel where you’ll actually want to come back to your room in the afternoon, maybe open the windows to let in that particular mix of church bells and Vespa engines that somehow sounds like Italy distilled into audio form.

  • Fabulous stay in the heart of Bologna. – Godina from United States – 10 July 2025 (10/10)

Right on Piazza Maggiore central to all sights. Beautiful room. Comfortable bed. Great communication from reservation to arrival. Eduardo helped us arrange a car to the train station.

What could be improved: Not a thing!

  • Exceptional – Joao from Brazil – 3 July 2025 (10/10)

Perfect place! Amazing room and location! The breakfast could be better! They offer only a cup of coffee, a croissant and a glass of juice!

  • A great location – Susan from Australia – 12 June 2025 (8/10)

This place is very clean, comfortable and well set up with water, coffee and milk. It is an excellent location and all the instructions were informative and accurate.

What could be improved: Unfortunately, someone entered our room at night by mistake. She was apologetic and it was an unintentional mistake. However, this was very disconcerting for us and we are not sure how she was able to enter our room.

  • Great room, good size, very quiet in central location. – Christopher from United Kingdom – 7 June 2025 (9/10)

Great room in heart of Bologna. Good size, very comfortable, and very quiet. Lots of restaurants and bars in very close proximity.

    What could be improved: nothing

  • A Perfect Stay in the Heart of Bologna – Matthew from Australia – 6 June 2025 (9/10)

Our stay at this charming apartment was absolutely wonderful. We arrived earlier than expected, and Eduardo went out of his way to accommodate us, which set a welcoming tone right from the start.

The location couldn’t be more central—nestled in the heart of Bologna, surrounded by the city’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere.

Despite being on a lively street that stays illuminated well into the night, the apartment is impressively quiet thanks to excellent double-glazed windows. The functioning shutters also made it easy to block out any light for a restful sleep.

The apartment itself was spotless, with a perfectly sized bedroom and a spacious bathroom featuring an extra-large shower. Access was convenient, with both an elevator and stairs, and we felt very secure thanks to the double-entry system and private key access.

Breakfast at the café just across the street was a good touch.

Beautiful room and bathroom right in the heart of Bologna. Eduardo was a helpful and patient host. Thank you. The complex consists of a number of rooms of different sizes and configurations. It would have been perfect for our family had it been available

What could be improved: It’s essentially a hotel so no cooking facilities. However, Italian breakfast was included.
