You’re literally a two-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, which means you get to stumble back from dinner at Osteria del Sole without navigating Bologna’s maze of porticoes in the dark (trust me, that’s a blessing).

What struck me most was how they’ve managed to keep the character of this old building while making it actually comfortable. The rooms have these gorgeous exposed beams and thick stone walls that keep things surprisingly cool even in August – though I mean, the AC doesn’t hurt either. The breakfast room overlooks a little courtyard that catches the morning light just right, and honestly, sitting there with a proper Italian coffee beats any hotel chain experience. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood too, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about avoiding the tourist crowds at the basilica, they told me about the side entrance that most people miss entirely. You know what else? They actually helped me figure out the bus situation to get to Modena for a day trip – not something they had to do, but they seemed to enjoy talking about the region.

The rooms themselves are what I’d call “thoughtfully done” – they’re not huge, but everything has its place, and the beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about this stuff). Some of the bathrooms are a bit compact, but that’s pretty standard for these converted historic buildings. The real win is the location though. Via San Petronio Vecchio is quiet enough that you can sleep with the windows open, but you’re still close enough to hear the evening buzz from the main squares. Plus, if you’re into food – and if you’re in Bologna, you better be – you’ve got Tamburini deli around the corner and some seriously good osterie within walking distance. I found myself coming back here between exploring just because the neighborhood felt like, well, a neighborhood rather than a tourist zone. For a 4-star place, it punches above its weight in terms of authenticity without sacrificing comfort, and honestly, that balance is harder to find than you’d think in Italian cities these days.
