The entrance is tucked into this gorgeous old building, and you have to go up to the first floor (which, you know, is actually the second floor if you’re American like me). But once you’re inside… wow. This place gets it right in ways that surprised me.

The thing about RK San Felice 50 is that it feels like someone actually thought about what travelers need, not just what looks good in photos. The rooms have this perfect balance – modern enough that everything works properly, but they’ve kept some of the original character that makes Bologna so special. I mean, you’re literally staying in a renovated historic building in the heart of the university district. My room had these beautiful high ceilings and windows that opened onto Via San Felice, and honestly, just watching the morning foot traffic – students heading to class, locals grabbing coffee – was half the entertainment. The beds are properly comfortable too, which isn’t always a given in boutique places like this.

What really sold me on this place was the location, though I hate using that word because everyone says it. But seriously – you’re a five-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, which means you can actually stumble home after dinner without dealing with taxis or trying to figure out the bus system. The university area is all around you, so there are these little trattorias and bars that tourists never find tucked into the side streets. I discovered this tiny osteria called Osteria del Borgo (just around the corner on Via del Borgo di San Pietro) that became my go-to spot for lunch. The staff at the hotel definitely knows the neighborhood – they steered me toward places that felt authentically local rather than just rattling off the usual tourist spots.

The service feels personal in a way that’s hard to fake. Check-in was smooth, but more importantly, they remember you’re staying there. Small stuff, like the front desk guy asking how that restaurant recommendation worked out, or helping me figure out the best way to get to the train station with my luggage. The 8.9 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Bologna, but everything they do, they do well. The WiFi actually works throughout the building, the shower pressure is solid, and the air conditioning kept up even during that brutal July heat wave I got caught in.

One thing to know – this is a lively neighborhood, especially on weekends when the university is in session. If you’re someone who needs complete silence to sleep, maybe pack earplugs. But honestly, the sounds of Via San Felice settling down for the night became part of the charm for me. You’re staying in a real Bologna neighborhood, not some sterile hotel district, and that comes with a bit of authentic Italian urban life. For what you get – the location, the thoughtful touches, the genuine warmth of the staff – it’s exactly what a good four-star experience should be.

  If you are going to Bologna this is the place to stay. Everything was perfect, from location, cleanliness, staff. Two fully functional bathrooms were a blessing since we were 5 girls. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. They let us do a late check out since our flight was later in the day.

  What could be improved: A. Bologna werkt met gescheiden afval, met o.a. een pasje voor bepaalde afvalcontainers. In het appartement ontbrak het aan faciliteiten hiervoor. B. Geen stopcontact naast bed voor opladen telefoon etc.

  What could be improved: Very poorly equipped especially kitchen. 3 cups for 4 people!! Bare minimum of other crockery and cutlery. No toaster.
