You know what struck me first about Aviana Suite? It’s tucked right on Via Altabella, which honestly feels like discovering a secret – this narrow medieval street that most tourists rush past on their way to the more obvious Bologna attractions. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but somehow you feel like you’ve found this quiet pocket that belongs to the locals.

The building itself has that solid, reassuring feel of old Bologna architecture – thick stone walls that actually keep the summer heat out (trust me, this matters in July). What I really appreciated was how they’ve done the renovation. It’s not trying too hard to be modern, but the suites feel genuinely comfortable rather than museum-piece fancy. The bathrooms are properly updated – good water pressure, which you can’t always count on in these historic buildings. And the soundproofing is surprisingly good considering you’re right in the centro storico. I was worried about noise from the restaurants below, but honestly, even during the evening rush when everyone’s heading to dinner, it stays pretty peaceful upstairs.

Here’s what you need to know about the location though – Via Altabella connects directly to Via Rizzoli, so you’re basically positioned on one of the main arteries without dealing with the chaos. There’s a fantastic little osteria called Osteria del Sole just around the corner (bring your own food, they only serve wine – it’s a whole thing, very Bologna). The morning routine here is perfect too. You step out and there’s this excellent coffee bar at the corner where locals actually go, not just tourists. The barista there, Paolo, makes probably the best cappuccino in this part of the city center.

Parking is… well, it’s Bologna, so forget about parking nearby. But the staff actually knows the system and can direct you to the right garage. Check-in was smooth – they clearly deal with international guests regularly but haven’t lost that personal touch. The woman at reception gave me genuinely useful restaurant recommendations, not just the obvious tourist spots. She steered me toward Trattoria Anna Maria for tortellini, which turned out to be absolutely right.

The suites themselves feel more spacious than you’d expect from the narrow street frontage – they’ve made smart use of the depth of these old buildings. Air conditioning works well (again, crucial in summer), and there’s enough storage space for a proper stay, not just an overnight stop. I particularly liked the little sitting area by the window where you can watch the street life with your morning coffee. Bologna has this rhythm to it – the early morning market vendors, the lunch rush, the evening passeggiata – and you get a real feel for it from here.

With a 9.3 rating, you’d expect it to be somewhat flawless, and honestly, it pretty much delivers. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the WiFi can be a bit spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but that’s hardly unique to this place. For a four-star property in this location, it hits that sweet spot of being genuinely comfortable without feeling corporate or impersonal.
