You know what caught me off guard about Realkasa Old Town Flat? The moment I stepped onto Via Avesella, I realized I was literally in the heart of medieval Bologna – I mean, you can practically reach out and touch the leaning towers from here. This isn’t one of those “centrally located” places that’s actually a 20-minute trek to anything interesting. We’re talking about a proper apartment-style setup where you can roll out of bed and be at Piazza Maggiore in maybe three minutes on foot.

The building itself has that authentic Bologna vibe – you know, those gorgeous porticoes that the city’s famous for are right outside your door. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to keep the old-world charm (think exposed beams and character) while actually making everything work properly. The apartment feels more like staying at a friend’s place than a hotel, which honestly makes sense given the 4-star rating and that solid 8.6 score from other travelers. The kitchen setup is particularly clutch if you want to grab fresh ingredients from Mercato delle Erbe – it’s this incredible local market that’s maybe a 5-minute walk away where you can actually see how Bolognese people shop for their daily groceries.

Here’s the thing about this location that you won’t get from most hotel descriptions: Bologna’s old town can get pretty lively, especially on weekends when the university students are out (and trust me, this is a serious university town). But Via Avesella somehow manages to be tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with constant noise, yet you’re still close enough to join the action when you want to. I found myself wandering over to Via del Pratello – that’s the main nightlife strip – whenever I felt like it, but coming back to a quiet street when I needed to actually sleep. The check-in process was refreshingly straightforward too, none of that awkward hotel lobby hovering. And parking? Well, this is Bologna’s historic center, so you’re better off using the train station (which connects beautifully to the rest of Italy) and just walking everywhere once you’re here. The whole old town is basically designed for wandering anyway, and you’ll find yourself discovering those hidden osterie and family-run shops that make Bologna such a food lover’s paradise.

  Clean and comfortable beds although the pillows were very flat.

  The sofa was very uncomfortable although we were out so much it didn't affect us too much.
  The shower didn't have enough hot water for all 4 of us to use.
  Not the flats fault but we found it quite noisy outside on Friday night which affected our sleep.
