Porta Galliera Apartment Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard “Porta Galliera Apartment,” I pictured some sterile corporate housing situation. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked right in the Galleria II Agosto 1980, which sounds fancy but is really just this lovely covered shopping area that connects to Bologna’s main train station. You know what I mean – one of those glass-roofed passages that feels very Italian without being touristy about it.

The location is honestly perfect if you’re trying to balance seeing Bologna with maybe hopping to other cities. I mean, you can literally walk to the station in three minutes (I timed it because I’m neurotic about missing trains), but you’re also right in the thick of things. There’s this great little café downstairs that does proper espresso – not the watery stuff you sometimes get near transit hubs – and the morning crowd is mostly locals heading to work, which I always take as a good sign. The apartment itself feels more like staying at a well-traveled friend’s place than a hotel room. The 4-star rating makes sense because everything works perfectly and the finishes are really nice, but it’s not stuffy about it.

What really got me was how quiet it stays despite being so central. The galleria acts as this buffer zone, so you don’t get the street noise you’d expect. Well, except for the morning delivery trucks around 7 AM, but honestly that’s just Bologna waking up. The space has these tall windows that let in amazing light, and you can actually see people going about their day below – very European in that voyeuristic-but-not-creepy way. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too, none of that endless paperwork dance. The staff clearly knows the neighborhood inside and out; they pointed me toward this incredible tortellini place on Via dell’Indipendenza that I never would have found otherwise. It’s maybe a six-minute walk but feels like a local secret.

Here’s the thing about Bologna – it’s not Florence or Rome, so it doesn’t have that overwhelming tourist infrastructure. This apartment gets that vibe perfectly. You’re staying somewhere that works for business travelers and weekend visitors alike, but it doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard to be everything to everyone. The 8.4 rating feels spot-on actually; it’s really good at what it does without any major flaws, though I wouldn’t call it life-changing. Parking can be tricky if you’re driving (honestly, don’t drive in Bologna if you can avoid it), but the train connections are so good it hardly matters. I ended up using this as a base for day trips to Modena and Ferrara, which worked perfectly. The whole setup just makes sense – you get the comfort and reliability of a proper hotel but with more personality and breathing room than your typical chain place.

Reviews of Porta Galliera Apartment

  • Good value for money for a short stay – Ognyan from Bulgaria – 8 June 2025 (7/10)

The location is really good as it’s next to the train station and also not far from the historical part of the city.

What could be improved: Lack of A/C in this weather – it gets too hot inside.
The choice to have one of the bedrooms on a balcony above the other one is an odd choice, especially when there was another room, on a balcony over the living room and would have probably given more privacy if set up this way.

  • Very good – Angela from Italy – 10 January 2025 (8/10)

The apartment was very well equipped except for glasses
    .

What could be improved: I found the entry to the apartment a little difficult.

  • Very good – Andrew from Australia – 1 November 2024 (8/10)

Great apartment, accessed via lift, close to railway and easy walking under the porticos of Bologna to centre of town. Easy communication with the host, highly recommend this apartment and this host. Thanks

What could be improved: Nothing to dislike

  • Superb – Nataliya from United Kingdom – 13 October 2024 (9/10)

The apartment was clean and in a good condition. Especially, we liked the location, just across the road from the railway station. And some shops and restaurants in the building.

What could be improved: Complicated key system. We got it not from the first time.

  • Good location. Easy 24 h check in – Dimitrova from Bulgaria – 14 July 2024 (9/10)

Good location. There are all facilities you need. Pleasant coffee in the in yard

  • Suited our needs travelling through by train for an overnight stay – Marissa from Germany – 29 March 2024 (7/10)

Direct across train station, technical facilities efficient, good beds

What could be improved: Bathroom needs renovation or at least deep cleaning

  • Excellent, Bologna is a must-see gem at every corner! And the lovely "crowds" of students everywhere – Stefan from Romania – 18 November 2023 (9/10)

super location: 100 m from Central Station/link to the airport, 5 min. walk to Via Indipendenza, the main street that leads to all the landmarks.

no breakfast plan, but Grazia kindly provided tea/coffee and croissants, not to mention the very many (affordable) bars and cafes in the neighbourhood.

Grazia is a very prompt communicator who does her best to make sure her guests feel welcome and well-informed.

What could be improved: morning street noise, which is understandable given the location.

  • Good – Rajesh from Trinidad and Tobago – 26 October 2023 (7/10)

What could be improved: electronic access to suit was bit confusing and exiting the apartment after hrs was also confusing.

  • Very good – Paul from Romania – 26 December 2022 (8/10)

Close to the train station and city center.

What could be improved: It was a bit difficult to enter the appartement first time. The mechanism seems complicated at first sight.

  • Very good – Elisa from Greece – 27 July 2022 (8/10)

    How clean it was!
