You know what struck me first about Petronio Residence? It’s tucked right on Via Francesco Rizzoli, which honestly feels like you’re staying in the heart of Bologna without the tourist circus. I mean, you’re literally a three-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but the street itself has this authentic residential vibe – you’ll hear actual Bolognese families going about their day, not just tour groups clicking away.

The building itself is one of those converted historic places that actually got the renovation right. They kept the original terracotta floors and high ceilings but didn’t go overboard trying to make everything look ancient. The rooms feel genuinely spacious (rare for Italian city centers), and honestly, the bathrooms are better than most four-star places I’ve stayed in. What really got me was the attention to small stuff – like, they have these thick curtains that actually block out the morning light, and the beds are firm enough that you don’t wake up feeling like you slept in a hammock. The air conditioning works properly too, which… well, if you’ve spent August in Bologna, you know that’s not always a given.

Location-wise, it’s pretty perfect for anyone who wants to explore the city on foot. Via dell’Indipendenza is right there for shopping and people-watching, and you’re close enough to the university area that you get this nice mix of students and locals in the cafés nearby. The morning market at Mercato di Mezzo is maybe a five-minute stroll – I’d grab fresh focaccia there most mornings and eat it walking back through the porticoes. Parking can be tricky (it’s a restricted zone), but the hotel staff actually knows the system and will sort you out with temporary passes if you’re driving. They’re surprisingly helpful about this kind of practical stuff, not just the usual “welcome, here’s your key” routine. The 9.2 rating makes sense when you stay there – it’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but everything just works the way it should, and the staff genuinely seems to care about whether you’re having a good time in their city.

  Excellent location and spacious bedroom. Air conditioning was really needed and appreciated. Easy access to washer and dryer on our floor. Also loved the keyless entry.

  Great location for exploring Bologna. Super cozy with everything needed for a short visit. Having a lift and washing machine (second floor) also made life a bit easier. Loved our stay here and would happily return. Also had great comms with the hosts.

  The location is splendid! Right in front of the two famous towers, in the very center of the city. Every attraction is within walking distance.
  
  The apartment was very clean and comfortable. Despite being on the top floor, it was not hot due to the great air conditioning and good circulation. The kitchen is very well equipped.The terrace is a great spot for having dinner.

  The location is extremely good. Impero caffe is at one minute walk where you can serve a very good breakfast.

  Perfectly located in the centre of the historic district and accessible by taxi and bus. It was such a pleasure to be able to walk to tourist sights. The beds were so comfortable (I like firm), the kitchen was nicely maintained and the washroom was clean and modern. The management was off-site but responded quickly to our messages. It was like having a friend around the corner!
  
  What could be improved: My mother is 94 yo and does not walk too well. The entrance has a few shallow stairs, which I did not expect. Luckily it was well-lit so she could see where to step. A handrail on the wall would be very useful.
