Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of Bologna hotels, and this place on Via Belmeloro actually gets it right. The name’s a bit of a mouthful – “Nel cuore della città universitaria” – but honestly, they’re not wrong about being in the heart of the university district. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the medieval towers and about five minutes from Piazza Maggiore, which means you’ll hear some student chatter in the evenings, but it’s the good kind of lively, not obnoxious.

The building itself has that restored historic feel without being stuffy about it. You know how some places try too hard to be “authentic Italian”? This isn’t that. The rooms are modern enough that the wifi actually works (thank god), and the bathrooms are properly updated, but they kept the original ceiling details and those gorgeous tall windows that let in so much light. I mean, you’re on a narrow medieval street, so don’t expect panoramic views, but there’s something nice about looking out at the old stone buildings across the way. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood – when I asked about where to grab breakfast, they didn’t just point me to the hotel restaurant but told me about this little place around the corner on Via delle Moline where locals actually go.

What really sold me on this place was the location for getting around. You’re close enough to walk everywhere that matters, but far enough from the main tourist drag that you’re not dealing with constant crowds right outside your door. The area gets pretty quiet after 10 PM, which is perfect if you’re not looking to party but still want to be in the thick of things during the day. Parking’s obviously a nightmare like everywhere in Bologna’s center, but they’ll sort you out with directions to a decent garage nearby. The whole Wonderful Italy operation seems pretty well-organized – check-in was smooth, no weird surprises on the bill, and they actually responded to emails before I arrived. It’s a solid 4-star experience without any of the pretentious nonsense you sometimes get at boutique places. If you want to feel like you’re staying in Bologna rather than just visiting it, this is your spot.

  Clean and comfortable; excellent location and very quiet. The building is very secure and the neighbourhood friendly and safe.
  
  What could be improved: While it was advertised as 2 bathrooms, the second was merely a toilet in the laundry! And no dish towel in the kitchen!!! The mattress on one of the beds slipped off its batons during the night but it was pretty easily fixed. All were minor issues.

  What could be improved: Badly in need of basic repair & updates. 2nd bathroom was a laundry with only an old toilet while primary bathroom had a vinyl curtain hung inside a tub which did not in anyway keep water it. After waiting over a minute got hot water in the bathroom sink it was looked with water as the drain was nearly plugged. Kitchen had no dish towel & only one of the 3 bialeti coffee pots worked. Mattress in one bedroom laid on a wooden platform which stuck out dangerously on each side.
  Host was poorly informed did not explain the 3 keys system to get in & was difficult to understand.

  It was a big appartment in the center of Bologna very close on foot to all the major sightseeing attractions. There were three air conditioning apparatuses which was very useful in July when we visited the city.
  
  What could be improved: The appartment could be cleaner in general and the residents from the appartment upstairs were too noisy which was disturbing.

  There was no breakfast supplied. It was a self catering apartment. We like to be able to look after our own meals and the kitchen facilities in the apartment are just perfect for catering for our needs
  
  What could be improved: We did not like that the apartment was a little noisy at night. This is due to the fact of its city centre location. We are aware that this comes with the territory of being in an urban area and can put up with it for the time we were there
