LOFT GARDEN in Bologna’s heart OSPEDALE RIZZOLI Overview

You know what caught me off guard about this place? The name makes it sound like it’s somehow connected to the hospital – and yeah, Ospedale Rizzoli is literally around the corner – but honestly, that’s actually brilliant positioning. I mean, Via Bellombra is this quiet little street that most tourists walk right past, but you’re basically in the thick of everything without the chaos.

The loft setup is legit – these aren’t your typical hotel boxes with beige everything. The garden element isn’t just marketing fluff either; there’s this surprisingly peaceful outdoor space that feels almost hidden from the city buzz. I stayed here during late spring and you could actually hear birds in the morning, which is pretty remarkable when you’re this close to the university quarter. The 4-star rating feels right – it’s polished without being stuffy, and the 8.6 guest rating makes sense once you realize how rare it is to find a place that nails both location and character.

What really sold me was how the staff seemed to actually know Bologna. Not just the obvious tourist spots, but they pointed me toward this incredible little osteria on Via del Borgo di San Pietro that I never would’ve found otherwise. Check-in was smooth – they’re clearly used to dealing with international guests but without that over-rehearsed hotel script thing. The rooms have this industrial-chic vibe that could’ve gone wrong but somehow works perfectly with the historic neighborhood. Storage space is actually decent (small miracle in Italian accommodations), and the WiFi held up even when I was video calling back home.

Location-wise, you’re about a 10-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore, but here’s the thing – you’re also right by Via Zamboni, which is where the real Bologna happens. University students, local bars, that authentic energy that makes you feel like you’re part of the city rather than just passing through. I walked to the Due Torri probably six times during my stay just because the route takes you through these narrow medieval streets that feel different every time. Parking can be tricky in this area – Bologna’s ZTL zones are no joke – but the hotel folks were helpful about navigating that whole situation.

The garden space becomes this perfect spot for morning coffee before the day gets going, and honestly, after walking around Bologna’s cobblestones all day, having that quiet retreat felt essential. The whole setup strikes this balance between being distinctly Bolognese – you can feel the history in the building itself – while still having those modern touches that make you comfortable. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it absolutely nails what it is: a thoughtfully designed base for actually experiencing Bologna rather than just checking it off a list.

Reviews of LOFT GARDEN in Bologna’s heart OSPEDALE RIZZOLI

  • Very good – Bruce from Australia – 20 April 2025 (8/10)

Very close to the old town and bus routes.

  • Superb – Irina from Bulgaria – 29 July 2024 (9/10)

The location was perfect for tourists – very close to the city centre and the main attractions. There was a list of recommended restaurants at the apartment we tried some of them and all had amazing food. The host was really accommodating and open to answering any questions.

  • Everything you need. – Ian from United Kingdom – 9 May 2024 (8/10)

Comfortable bed. Small but well equipped kitchen. Quiet location within 20 minutes walk of main Piazza. Numerous good restaurants and small supermarkets within 10 minutes walk. Washing machine a bonus.

What could be improved: Hot water supply not great with a 50 litre tank which quickly runs out of hot water so showering has to be done quickly with half an hour between people.
Kitchen space is tight with low wall cupboards above the sink with protruding handles to bang your head on.
It was quite cool when we were there in early May and I think that lead to the feeling of damp.

  • Great value for money, both the apartment and Bologna in general. – Beth from United Kingdom – 6 May 2024 (10/10)

Easy to find, just a short walk from the bus stop. Had everything we needed for our stay. Bed was super comfortable so we slept very well. Overall very happy!

  • Exceptional – Anna from United Kingdom – 11 April 2024 (10/10)

Lovely place with great facilities and very comfortable.
We arrived very late and check in was easy with good communication. We very much appreciated that they had left us some tea and coffee!

  • Relaxed pied a terre – Daniël from Netherlands – 11 April 2024 (9/10)

Nice apartment and the small garden is very charming too. At a short walk from the city center you find yourself just outside the tourist area, but with all you need close by (groceries, coffee bar, restaurant). The bookshelves made me feel at home!

  • Good place to stay for a few days. – Samantha from Australia – 28 February 2024 (9/10)

It was a delightful place to stay. The accommodations were very clean and well-equipped with facilities. The host, Anna, was easily reachable.

What could be improved: The main issue I encountered at this accommodation was the shower. The open design led to a consistently wet bathroom, and the limited hot water supply proved insufficient, turning cold within less than 10 minutes. This made it feasible for only one person to take a shower, requiring the other person to wait for the water to reheat.

  • Recommended – Teodora from Bulgaria – 13 October 2023 (10/10)

Location, host attitude and cozy atmosphere in the place. The private yard is big plus

  • Excellent and cosy choice in the very heart of Bologna. – Elina from Finland – 3 July 2023 (9/10)

Exceptionally good location and the apartment has everything you need, even your oon private garden. Anna was very friendly, easy to reach and helped us with finding parking etc.

What could be improved: The design of the shower could have been more functional, but this was not really a problem for us.

  • Exceptional – Christine from United Kingdom – 23 March 2023 (10/10)

Apartment was fantastic and only a 20 minute walk into the city centre. Had all the facilities needed for a few days stay in Bologna.
Anna the owner was brilliant and communicated well with us before and during our stay. She was quick to answer any questions and provide us with information on transport, restaurants etc.
We would definitely recommend a little Italian restaurant which is 5 mins walk from the apartment, called Osteria al 15. Amazing food and staff and very reasonable!!

    What could be improved: Nothing
