Lo chalet di Giulia – Romantic terrace Overview
First Impressions
Walking up Via Fondazza to find Lo chalet di Giulia – Romantic terrace, you’ll notice you’re in one of those perfectly preserved Bologna neighborhoods where locals still hang laundry from their windows and the morning espresso ritual happens at the corner bar. This four-star property sits right in the heart of Bologna‘s centro storico, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering — couples consistently rate it a perfect 10, which tells you something about the romantic factor here.
The Space and That Terrace
The room itself feels more like staying in a friend’s beautifully renovated apartment than a typical hotel. There’s character in the details — exposed beams, thoughtful lighting, and furnishings that actually look like someone chose them with care rather than ordering them from a catalog. But let’s talk about what really sets this place apart: that terrace. I mean, when a property puts “romantic terrace” right in its name, you expect something special, and this delivers. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll find yourself lingering over morning coffee way longer than planned, watching the neighborhood come alive below.
Location Magic
You know what’s great about Via Fondazza? You’re genuinely in the thick of things without being on a tourist-clogged main drag. The location score of 9.5 isn’t just marketing fluff — you can walk to Piazza Maggiore in about ten minutes, but you’re tucked away enough that you feel like you’ve discovered something. The university quarter is right there, which means good energy and plenty of authentic spots for aperitivo. Plus, you’re close enough to the famous porticoes that you can duck under them when it rains (and trust me, having that covered walkway system nearby is actually pretty brilliant).
The Bologna Experience
What I really appreciate about staying here is how it connects you to the real Bologna rhythm. In the morning, you’ll hear the city waking up — the coffee machine at the bar downstairs, people heading to work, the gentle hum of a neighborhood that’s lived-in rather than just visited. The property sits in what locals consider the real heart of the city, and that’s not just promotional language — you’re genuinely positioned where Bolognesi actually live and work. It’s close enough to everything you want to see, but far enough from the day-tripper crowds that you get a more authentic feel for the city.
Why Guests Love It
The combination of location and that romantic terrace creates something pretty special for couples — hence those perfect location ratings. You’re not just getting a place to sleep; you’re getting a little Bologna hideaway with outdoor space, which is actually quite rare in the centro storico. The 8.2 overall rating reflects what you’d expect from a well-run four-star property, but it’s really the personal touches and that neighborhood authenticity that make people remember this place. If you want to experience Bologna like you’re temporarily living there rather than just passing through, this captures that feeling perfectly.

Reviews of Lo chalet di Giulia – Romantic terrace
Pleasant – Ciara from United Kingdom – 12 July 2025 (6/10)
Cute apartment in a great location. Communication with the host was excellent and we had no issues accessing the property. WiFi dropped at one stage and was promptly fixed. The balcony is very pleasant.
What could be improved: Unfortunately the flat was unclean. Lots of hair on the bathroom floor. Cups and glasses were filthy, with residue in the bottom. Dead plants on the balcony. It needs to be thoroughly cleaned between stays.A lovely few days, home away from home – Cristeen from United Kingdom – 2 June 2025 (10/10)
Perfect for our needs, we enjoyed the balcony and used the kitchen for some meals, there was everything we required. The location is wonderful, not far from some local bars and the centre, there are good supermarkets close by.
What could be improved: NaCharming and easy – Patricia from Germany – 3 January 2025 (10/10)
Clean, cute, uncomplicated. We had a great stay. Linens and towels are good and well maintained. Lovely balcony.
What could be improved: Everything went fine. Minor detail: there was no cutlery in the kitchen.Superb – Magdalena from Poland – 17 November 2024 (9/10)
Quiet and cosy place
Very good – Aidil from United States – 12 November 2024 (8/10)
Really liked the neighborhood. There are some great restaurants, cafes, bars, and supermarkets nearby (even a small movie theater). The apartment is well equipped with most things you would need/want during a vacation, making it very convenient and comfortable. Everything was very clean. The kitchen and bathroom were very spacious. You definitely have lots of privacy cause the small downstairs room is completely separate from the upstairs bed/living quarters. The instructions about how to get into the property/access the keys were excellent. The owner was very responsive whenever we had issues (we lost hot water and the internet went out). I absolutely love Bologna and think it's an underrated city that everyone should visit if they have spare time in Italy.
What could be improved: I had messaged the owner to ask about the stairs because my mother is 73 and has mobility issues. He assured me it was totally fine for someone with mobility issues. It was not. My mother had a really tough time going up and down the stairs. He failed to mention the building has high ceilings so there are a lot of stairs to climb. Additionally, on some days, the lights in the building go out after a minute or so (they're on a timer – which I really appreciate for environmental reasons, but isn't great for someone who can't quickly move) which made it very challenging for my mom, who would suddenly find herself halfway up the stairs in the dark. So basically, she could not go up or down the stairs without me after a certain time (so I could turn on the lights again.) All-in-all it was very stressful for my mother to get in and out of the apartment and I wish the owner had been more upfront about this information so that I could have made an informed decision. I just read another review who complained about the same thing and he responded angrily. Dude, you can't respond rudely to reviews – respect people's opinions! There was also an unpleasant smell that came out of the toilet but that is common in European bathrooms.Good – Ana from Australia – 23 September 2024 (7/10)
The location was excellent and we had everything we needed including a nice coffee machine and a great view of the sunset!
What could be improved: There were quite a few stairs to get to the property, which we managed, but I wouldn't like to see an elderly person trying to do it. The second bedroom is again down a set of stairs, not very comfortable. There wasn't a lot of room for our clothes, lots of space in the apartment is taken by empty furniture.Very good – John from Sweden – 29 August 2024 (8/10)
The apartment was very cozy, clean and was equipped with everything we needed. It was located in a calm area within walking distance to the city center (10-15 minutes). We especially enjoyed the terrace, where we had breakfast with a beautiful view. The self-check-in went smooth thanks to the clear instructions.
What could be improved: Our only negative comment is that it was very hot when we arrived at the apartment, and it took a long time to cool it down with the AC. But onwards, the temperature was good.Cosy, quiet apartment in central Bologna – Callus-scott from United Kingdom – 25 July 2024 (8/10)
The host always replied quickly to any questions we had and was very accommodating, letting us have access to the apartment when we arrived in Bologna some 3 hours before the scheduled 3pm check in time, which we were grateful for. The property was in a quiet side street off one of the city's main roads and the apartment was tucked away at the top of the apartment block, which was housed in an historic building and was very quiet, we didn't hear any external noise, which was amazing, bearing in mind its location. The apartment was modern and clean and the big bed was very comfortable. The space was used very well, and the balcony was a bonus. The apartment was about a 20-minute walk to the main attractions, but a grocery store, bars and cafes were in the immediate vicinity and access to a plethera of amenities literally just around the corner. The train station was about a 40-minute walk but can also be reached by regular buses from a nearby location.
The people of Bologna were very friendly and the location of the apartment and the city centre felt safe. Bologna itself is a good base for access to other towns and cities for day trips to Verona, Venice, Florence, Milan, or further afield to Pisa, even Rome or Naples are accessible due to a fantastic railway network.
We really enjoyed our stay both in Bologna and in the apartment.
What could be improved: It would have been nice to have had a kettle.Great location, very quick response to messages. A very clean and cute property. – Peter from United Kingdom – 24 September 2023 (9/10)
Location, room and the small balcony.
What could be improved: No kettle!Great apartment. Spacious enough. We were two at some point but can easily accommodate 4 people. A couple and two friend – Nisrine from Canada – 7 July 2023 (10/10)
Lo chalet di Giulia is very well situated in Bologna’ centre. It is a walking distance to many attractions and the University of Bologna. Other ites are easily accessible by bus. It is about 25 min or so by foot from the train station, which can also be reached easily by buses that pass by every 10 min or so. It is great for day trips to Florence and Venice, for example. It is a very nice and safe residential area and you get the authentic feeling of what it is like to live there. The location allows quiet time to rest but there are lots of cafes and little restaurants and life is buzzing nearby. There is AC, which is a must in Bologna’s hot weather.
Nicolo, our host was very helpful and he kindly volunteered to order taxis for us to the airport. He answers questions quickly and is willing to help throughout the stay.
What could be improved: There is no elevator and the place is in the third floor. However, if you like to take the stairs, it is perfectly fine. It was not an issue for me or my friend.
