La dimora degli asinelli Overview
You know what struck me first about La dimora degli asinelli? The name itself – “the dwelling of the little donkeys” – which honestly makes you wonder what you’re getting into. But once you’re standing on Via Guglielmo Marconi, just a few blocks from Bologna’s historic center, it all starts making sense. This isn’t your typical corporate hotel trying to impress with marble lobbies and stuffy formality. Instead, it’s got this quietly charming thing going on that feels authentically Bolognese, if that makes sense.
The location is actually pretty brilliant – you’re close enough to walk to Piazza Maggiore in about ten minutes, but far enough from the tourist chaos that you can actually sleep at night. Via Marconi is one of those streets where you’ll see locals heading to work in the morning, not just groups of tourists with maps. I mean, sure, you’ll hear some street noise during the day, but it’s the good kind – conversations in rapid Italian, the occasional Vespa, that sort of thing. The building itself has character without being overly precious about it. You can tell someone put real thought into the renovation without erasing all the personality.
What really gets me is how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between intimate and professional. The staff actually remembers your name (and your coffee preference, which matters a lot in Italy), but they’re not hovering around trying to anticipate your every need. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no upselling, no lengthy explanations of amenities I’ll never use. Just genuine helpfulness when I asked about the best route to avoid the pedestrian crowds near the university area. Speaking of which, if you’re visiting during the academic year, book early. Bologna’s got this constant buzz of students, and places like this – the ones that feel more like staying at a particularly stylish friend’s place – fill up fast. The rooms themselves are comfortable in that understated European way, where everything just works without calling attention to itself. And honestly, after a day of wandering Bologna’s porticoed streets and eating way too much mortadella, that’s exactly what you want. The 9.3 rating isn’t just numbers on a screen – you can feel why people keep coming back here.

What could be improved: Everything was great.Very good location and host. Felt very welcomed. Would come back. – Cristiano from United Kingdom – 15 June 2025 (9/10)
We were able to get the keys before the check in time. The flat is big and very clean. Comfy bed. Well equipped kitchen (plates, cutlery, cookware, fridge and freezer, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine with complementary pods). Bathroom with shower and toiletries (basic ones). Very welcoming host that provided tips for the city and welcomed us with some treats. 10 min walk from centre. Easy to access paid underground car park (5-7min walk to the flat).
What could be improved: Would have appreciated an extra blanket. No washing machine (would have been nice, however didn't bother us too much).Superb spot – Andrew from New Zealand – 5 June 2025 (10/10)
Location easy walk station and center. Great communication
Lots of extras provided. Used Nespresso every morning. Replenish towels after two days

Glad we booked this apartment! We received a warm welcome from our hosts, who were very quick to respond by WhatsApp to our questions. The unit had all the essentials needed and a few extra surprise treats. We were a short walk to train station and restaurants. One day, we rented a car at train station and drove to Modena, super fun. Overall, the rental was perfect for our three night stay and hosts were exceptionally friendly!

Everything was perfect. We stayed only for one night. Best host ever. Took care about our parking, places to eat, met earlier than check in time. Only positive things. Apartment has everything for the stay, even snacks for breakfast. Comfortable bed. All was clean. Just at the edge of the old city – direct walk.
