You know what’s funny about Bologna? Everyone talks about the food scene and the university crowds, but they miss these incredible little hideaways tucked into the medieval core. D’Azeglio & Galluzzi Suites is exactly that – honestly, I walked past the entrance on Corte de Galluzzi twice before realizing this narrow passage between buildings was actually where I needed to go. It’s on the primo piano (first floor for us Americans), and there’s something almost secretive about climbing those stairs to check in. The whole setup feels like you’re staying in someone’s elegant apartment rather than a hotel, which I mean… that’s basically what it is.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to be right in the thick of things without dealing with the chaos of the main tourist drags. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore – I timed it because I’m weird like that – but tucked away enough that you won’t hear drunk students stumbling home at 2 AM. The morning sounds are actually lovely: church bells, the occasional Vespa puttering down the narrow streets, maybe some animated Italian conversation drifting up from the courtyard. The suites themselves are spacious (rare for Italian city centers) with these gorgeous period details – exposed beams, original brick archways, the kind of stuff that makes you feel like you’re living in a Renaissance painting. The kitchenettes are actually functional too, not just for show, which matters when you want to grab fresh ingredients from Mercato delle Erbe and try your hand at making pasta.

What really gets me is how the staff treats you – like you’re a temporary local rather than just another tourist checking boxes. They’ll tell you which osteria actually serves the best tortellini en brodo (hint: it’s not the one with the longest line), or how to avoid the crowds at the Basilica di San Petronio by going right when it opens. The whole experience feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find, especially with a 9.5 rating that’s clearly earned through attention to detail rather than flashy amenities. Sure, you won’t find a pool or a fitness center, but you will find heated bathroom floors, ridiculously comfortable beds, and windows that actually open – which sounds basic but trust me, it’s not always a given in historic buildings. If you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re discovering Bologna rather than just visiting it, this place gets it right.
