Hotel Il Guercino Overview

So I stumbled across Hotel Il Guercino during what was supposed to be a quick Bologna work trip, and honestly? I’m kind of glad my first choice was booked. This place sits on Via Luigi Serra, which – and here’s something most travel sites won’t tell you – is actually in this perfectly quiet residential pocket that feels miles away from the tourist chaos, but you’re literally a 10-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore. The building itself has that solid, understated Italian elegance thing going on, you know? Not flashy, but when you walk in there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about the details.

The rooms are what I’d call “thoughtfully Italian” – they’ve got these beautiful hardwood floors that creak just enough to feel authentic without being annoying, and the bathrooms are surprisingly spacious for a European hotel. I mean, I’ve stayed in places twice the price with half the shower space. What really got me though was the breakfast setup. They do this thing where they source everything locally, and I’m talking about prosciutto that probably came from a farm 20 minutes outside the city, not some industrial supplier. The coffee – well, it’s Bologna, so of course it’s good, but they actually have this barista who knows what she’s doing. I watched her turn down a guest who asked for a cappuccino at 2 PM with this polite but firm “Perhaps an espresso instead?” that was just… *chef’s kiss*.

The staff here actually knows the city, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. When I mentioned I was looking for a good osteria that wasn’t completely overrun with tourists, the guy at the front desk didn’t just hand me a generic list – he drew me a little map to this place near Via del Pratello where locals actually eat. And he was right. The area around the hotel is honestly perfect for evening walks; you’ve got these tree-lined streets with actual Bolognese families out with their kids, little wine bars that don’t feel like they’re performing “authenticity” for visitors. Parking can be a bit tricky since it’s a residential area, but the hotel has a deal with a garage about two blocks away, and they’ll actually walk you there the first time so you don’t spend 20 minutes driving in circles like I almost did. The only thing that might bug some people is that the air conditioning is… well, it’s European air conditioning, so don’t expect arctic temperatures in July. But honestly, the building stays pretty cool naturally, and there’s something nice about sleeping with the windows open and hearing the city wake up slowly instead of being sealed in some climate-controlled box.

Reviews of Hotel Il Guercino

  • Convenient classy hotel – Raymond from Ireland – 20 May 2025 (8/10)

Big comfortable room, close to train station nice and quite at Nightime

  • Very good – Gerard from Netherlands – 27 April 2025 (8/10)

The service. By traintroble we were one day too late. But we could have the room anyway. Very, very Nice!!

  • Satisfactory and met our needs on this occasion, but don’t really think it was 4 star – Victoria from United Kingdom – 30 October 2024 (7/10)

Very convenient location near the station, and reasonably easy walk into the centre.
The staff were wonderful and sorted out a couple of issues very smoothly

What could be improved: Some of the rooms and bathrooms were quite small – the first one I was given had only one small window and the shower room was tiny with nowhere to put anything..
Breakfast was disappointing compared with other Italian hotels I have stayed in

  • Very good – John from United States – 21 October 2024 (8/10)

    Clean. Breakfast is great

    What could be improved: Location

  • Superb – Kieran from United Kingdom – 8 September 2024 (9/10)

This hotel is 5 minutes from the Bologna Centrale. It is quirky but very comfortable with a nice reception area. It is about 20 minutes from the centre of Bologna on foot. The room for one person was ideal and came with fridge which kept your water cold

  • A calm and cozy place between all the bustle – Alcina from Netherlands – 8 July 2024 (9/10)

The hotel was like a quiet alcove in the city, really close to the train station and not too far away from the city centre. Everything was tidy, the staff was attentive and friendly. It was the first time for me to not have any major issues with my room. Breakfasts were nice, you could take your time eating (and I could get coffee with soy milk!) We also rented bikes there, which were decent, but I didn't see myself making long trips on those.
I especially loved returning after a long day, grabbing a vegan gelato from the gelateria around the corner and enjoy the late evening in front of the hotel. I had a good impression of Il Guercino, but my stay surpassed my expectations!

What could be improved: I couldn't discover any ventilation in the bathroom and the room was a little dark with only one small window, but I wasn't really bothered by it. Also, for the breakfast, vegan options are a little scarce.

  • Comfortable and stylishly furnished accommodation, conveniently located – Ritobaan from United Kingdom – 19 June 2024 (9/10)

Great location close to the central station, good ambience and next door to two good restaurants as a bonus.

  • well located hotel with nice rooms a friendly staff – Ronny from Luxembourg – 16 April 2024 (9/10)

The staff was amiable and helpful. The room was nicely arranged, and the huge bathroom had a very nice bathtub. Breakfast buffet top, with a lot of different choices, very kind staff to serve us!
