Hotel Centrale Overview
First Impressions
Walking down Vicolo Cattani, you’d almost miss Hotel Centrale if you weren’t looking for it — and that’s actually part of its charm. This three-star gem sits tucked away on a quiet side street in the heart of Bologna, but don’t let the unassuming entrance fool you. The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that you’ve found something special, something that feels more like a well-kept local secret than a typical tourist hotel.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s the thing about Bologna — it’s all about being in the centro storico, and this place nails it perfectly. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, which means you can stumble back to your room after a late dinner without dealing with taxis or figuring out bus routes. I mean, couples rate the location 9.4 out of 10, and honestly, I get it. You can grab morning coffee at one of those tiny bars locals actually use, then spend your evening wandering the porticoes without ever feeling like you’re in some touristy bubble.
The Rooms and Comfort
The rooms here aren’t going to blow you away with fancy amenities, but they’re exactly what you want after a day of exploring — clean, comfortable, and surprisingly quiet considering you’re in the city center. The beds are actually decent (which, let’s be honest, isn’t always a given at this price point), and the bathrooms are modern enough that you won’t feel like you’re roughing it. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to maintain some character in the space without making it feel dated.
Breakfast Worth Getting Up For
You know what surprised me? The breakfast spread is genuinely good. They’ve got this buffet setup with proper Italian pastries — not the sad, pre-packaged stuff you sometimes get — plus continental options and even vegetarian and gluten-free choices. The coffee is strong and actually tastes like coffee, which sounds basic but you’d be amazed how many places get this wrong. It’s the kind of breakfast that sets you up properly for a day of wandering Bologna’s food markets and medieval streets.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t a place that’s trying to be something it’s not. Hotel Centrale works because it understands what travelers actually need — a solid base in an unbeatable location without the inflated prices of the fancier hotels nearby. The staff knows the neighborhood well enough to point you toward the good stuff (like which osteria actually serves the best tortellini), and there’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that feels connected to the real Bologna rather than isolated from it. With an 8.2 rating, it’s clearly hitting the mark for people who want authentic experiences over Instagram-perfect lobbies.
Bologna hotels keep food lovers close to fresh pasta workshops, balsamic tastings, and cobbled alley trattorie.

We arrived by train and it was a 15 minute walk to the hotel. We were in an annex just a few yards from the hotel, it was large and had a small kitchenette with fridge etc which was so convenient to bring food back to eat, very clean and quiet, slept really well. Breakfast was plentiful and staff lovely and friendly. Very centrally located for the town
