Genio Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Genio? I was expecting another generic Bologna hotel, but this place actually feels like someone’s sophisticated apartment that they’ve opened to travelers. It’s tucked away on Via del Genio – and I mean really tucked away, in the Saragozza neighborhood where you’re more likely to bump into locals heading to the market than tour groups wielding selfie sticks.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Bologna like you live there. You’re a pleasant 15-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but here’s the thing – you’re right in the thick of real neighborhood life. There’s this incredible little osteria about three doors down where the owner’s grandmother still makes tortellini by hand (I watched her through the window), and the morning sounds are church bells and coffee machines, not traffic. The hotel sits on the ground floor of what looks like a typical Bolognese building, but step inside and it’s all clean lines and thoughtful design touches. I mean, they’ve managed to make a 4-star place feel intimate rather than corporate, which is harder than it sounds.

What really impressed me was how they’ve nailed the details that actually matter when you’re traveling. The rooms have proper blackout curtains – not those flimsy hotel ones that let in every streetlight. The shower pressure is fantastic (seriously, after walking around Bologna’s cobblestones all day, this matters). And the staff… well, they’re the kind of people who remember your name and actually have good restaurant recommendations beyond the obvious tourist spots. They pointed me toward this tiny trattoria in the university quarter that I never would have found otherwise. The neighborhood itself is wonderfully quiet at night, though you’ll hear the occasional Vespa puttering by – it’s part of the charm, honestly.

I stayed during shoulder season in October, and the whole area felt perfectly lived-in without being crowded. You’re close enough to walk to the university district when you want energy, but far enough from the main tourist drag that you can actually think. The hotel’s 9.6 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be flashy or Instagram-perfect, it’s just genuinely comfortable and well-run. If you’re the type of traveler who wants to feel like you’re staying in a real neighborhood rather than a tourist bubble, this is exactly what you’re looking for.

  Beautiful location, bus stop to get to the centre really close (returning is harder to manage). The house is more beautiful than what you see in the pictures.

  The apartment is located pretty close to the city, about 20-30 mins on foot from the historical city center. There are bus stops nearby, about a 5-10 mins walk – even a 24h one. It has a varied selection of amenities and is pretty good equiped in general. You should consider it as a selection if you are traveling with a car, due to having a private parking space. The apartment location is pretty quiet and close to parks and nature. Owner was really helpful with providing necessary information and answering questions.
  
  What could be improved: Keep in mind that there is no air-conditioning on site – apartment has fans though.

  We enjoyed Stefano's warm welcome. He's easily understandable if you do not speak italian, and accessible if you got problems on your way to its house.

  The apartment is located really close to bus station, so we could quickly get to the city. We were kindly welcomed by lady owner. Generally the apartment was clean and cosy with modern bathroom.

  Beautiful house in a nice area on the hill, the bus stop to the center is only 5min away. The pictures don't do justice to the place! Very spacious, clean and comfortable, an ideal stay in Bologna!
  
  What could be improved: For the money we paid I would have expected the house to be better equipped in electric devices, for example I missed a toaster and a boiler, or a coffee machine. Moreover, the washing machine didn't get our clothes clean, even though we set it at 40°. Still I would recommend it to others, and would stay there again if returned to Bologna!
