CasAvesella Overview
You know, I’ve walked past CasAvesella on Via Avesella probably a dozen times before actually staying there – it’s one of those places that doesn’t scream “look at me” from the street, which honestly turned out to be part of its charm. The entrance is pretty understated, tucked into this historic building that feels properly Bolognese, not like those chain hotels that could be anywhere in the world. When I finally booked a room there last spring, I was kicking myself for waiting so long.
The thing about this place is that it gets the balance right between being polished (it’s definitely earning those four stars) and feeling authentic to where you actually are. The rooms have this warm, lived-in elegance – I mean, the furnishings are quality without being stuffy, and you can tell someone actually thought about lighting instead of just installing whatever was cheapest. My room faced the courtyard, which was perfect because Via Avesella can get a bit noisy during the day with delivery trucks heading to the restaurants nearby. The bed was honestly one of the better ones I’ve had in Italy – firm but not punishing, if you know what I mean. Little touches like the locally-made toiletries and the fact that they actually provide decent hangers (why do hotels always skimp on hangers?) made a difference.
What really won me over was how the staff seemed to genuinely know Bologna, not just the tourist basics. When I asked about somewhere good for aperitivo that wasn’t overrun with tourists, the desk clerk sent me to this tiny place on Via del Pratello that locals actually go to – turns out it was maybe a seven-minute walk away. The neighborhood itself is brilliant for that, actually. You’re close enough to the center that you can walk to Piazza Maggiore in about ten minutes, but you’re also right there with some of the city’s best everyday restaurants. There’s this little osteria practically next door where I ended up eating three times because, well, the tortellini was ridiculous. The area feels residential in the best way – you’ll see people walking their dogs in the morning, kids heading to school, that sort of thing that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere real instead of tourist-land. Parking can be tricky if you’re driving (Bologna’s city center is pretty much a maze), but they’ll sort you out with directions to a nearby garage. The 9.1 rating makes sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in the city, but everything they do, they do well.

Reviews of CasAvesella
Comfortable stay in a lovely city – Ernest from Australia – 21 April 2025 (10/10)
Very clean and comfortable, a 10 minute walk from the apartment to the city centre. Communication with the host was easy and the amenities were great.
What could be improved: The washing machine was difficult to access. You need to use the step ladder provided while trying not to bump your head. We are in our early seventies and managed ok but it would be difficult for anyone with mobility or balance issuesVery good – Martina from Italy – 17 October 2024 (8/10)
