Walking into Castelfiore feels like discovering a well-kept secret right in the middle of Bologna. The hotel sits on Piazza Giosué Carducci, which honestly couldn’t be more central if it tried — you’re literally steps away from everything that makes this city tick. What struck me immediately was how this four-star property manages to feel both intimate and polished without any of that stuffy hotel atmosphere you sometimes get in historic city centers.

The Heart of Bologna

You know what’s brilliant about this location? You can walk to the famous Two Towers in about eight minutes, and the university district is right there too. I mean, Piazza Maggiore is practically around the corner, but here’s the thing — despite being so central, the piazza itself has this lovely residential feel to it. You’ll see locals heading to the nearby cafés in the morning, and there’s actually a sense of neighborhood life happening around you. The fact that they’ve got private parking available is honestly a godsend if you’re driving into Bologna — trust me, you don’t want to be circling those narrow medieval streets looking for a spot.

The Room Experience

My room had this perfect balance of modern comfort and Italian charm that you hope for but don’t always find. The windows opened onto the piazza, and I loved watching the daily rhythm of the neighborhood unfold below. The beds are genuinely comfortable — not just hotel-marketing comfortable — and the bathrooms are well-designed with good water pressure (which, let’s be honest, matters more than fancy toiletries). What I appreciated most was the attention to details like proper reading lights and enough outlets where you actually need them.

Dining and Daily Rhythms

While the hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, this actually works in your favor because you’re surrounded by some of Bologna’s best trattorias and osterias. The staff knows the neighborhood inside and out — they pointed me toward this incredible little place two streets over that I never would have found on my own. Breakfast is served in a cozy space that feels more like someone’s elegant dining room than a hotel breakfast area, and they do a proper Italian spread with excellent coffee that’ll fuel your morning explorations.

There’s something about Castelfiore that just clicks, especially if you’re traveling as a couple — the whole setup feels romantic without being overly precious about it. The 9.5 rating makes perfect sense when you experience how everything works together: the prime location, the genuine warmth of the staff, and that feeling of staying somewhere that locals would actually recommend.   Marco is an incredible host. He is very kind and helpful and provides all the information that a guest needs.
  Castelfiore is very well decorated, it's generally clean and modern, it has a great location (I could visit the most important places in Bologna by walking) and it is very quiet at night.
  Also provides some snacks and coffee and tea included on the booking, which is nice to most of the guests.
  I highly recommend Castelfiore as your choice when visiting Bologna.
