You know what? I’ve stayed in a lot of apartments in Bologna over the years, and Casa Ortelia actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. It’s tucked into this gorgeous historic building on Via San Vitale – and I mean properly historic, not just “charming European old” but the kind of place where you run your hand along stone walls that have been there for centuries. The thing is, Via San Vitale is one of those streets that feels authentically Bolognese without being touristy. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but honestly, it doesn’t feel like you’re in the thick of things. More like you’re staying where actual residents live, which is exactly what you want.

The apartment itself has this perfect balance of old-world character and modern comfort that’s honestly hard to find. I mean, the ceilings are high and gorgeous, the floors have that satisfying creak of old wood, but everything actually works – the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out, the shower has proper pressure, and the kitchen is equipped well enough that you can actually cook if you want to. Which, by the way, you should absolutely do at least once because the morning market at Mercato delle Erbe is just down the street, and there’s nothing quite like making coffee with beans from that little roastery on Via Drapperie. The bed was genuinely comfortable too – not one of those European mattresses that feels like sleeping on a board.

What really won me over, though, was how the place feels connected to the neighborhood. In the morning, you hear the coffee bar downstairs come to life around 7 AM with the espresso machine hissing and locals chatting, but it’s not disruptive – it’s more like the city’s gentle alarm clock. The building has this beautiful courtyard that you glimpse from some of the windows, and there’s something deeply satisfying about watching Bologna wake up from there. Parking can be a bit tricky if you’re driving (honestly, don’t drive in Bologna’s center unless you absolutely have to), but the building is close enough to several parking areas that it’s manageable. The check-in was smooth – they actually met me at the apartment, which I appreciated after a long travel day. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the street can get a bit lively on weekend evenings, but that’s Bologna for you, and the windows do a decent job keeping the noise manageable. Plus, if you’re the type who likes to people-watch with a glass of wine, the sounds of the evening passeggiata are actually pretty wonderful. That 9.4 rating makes complete sense – this is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re really experiencing Bologna, not just passing through it.

  The location was very good. 10 mins walk to the two towers and 20 mins to Piazza Maggiore. Easy to explore the historic centre from the apartment. It was quiet, comfortable, very well presented and clean. Great WiFi connection. The owner was very responsive to any questions for information.
