You know what caught me off guard about Casa L&R? It’s tucked away on Via Matteotti in this quiet residential pocket that honestly feels more like stumbling into someone’s stylish home than checking into a hotel. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the chaos of Piazza Maggiore, but the street itself has this almost secretive calm to it – the kind of place where locals actually live and do their grocery shopping at the little markets nearby.

The building itself is one of those classic Bologna beauties with the honey-colored stone that the city’s famous for, and when you step inside… well, it’s clear someone put real thought into this place. The design feels authentically Italian but not in that overdone way some hotels try too hard to achieve. Actually, the staff genuinely seems to care about what they’re doing, which is refreshing – they knew the neighborhood well enough to point me toward this incredible little osteria on Via del Borgo di San Pietro that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms have this perfect balance of old-world charm and modern comfort, though I’ll be honest, if you’re traveling in summer, you’ll appreciate that they’ve got proper air conditioning (not always a given in historic Italian buildings). The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious too, which matters when you’re trying to get ready for dinner and your travel partner is doing the same thing.

What really sealed it for me was the location’s relationship to the rest of Bologna. You’re close enough to walk to the university area – great for that evening aperitivo crowd – but you’re also positioned perfectly for exploring the Quadrilatero market district in the morning when the vendors are setting up and the whole area smells like fresh bread and aged cheese. The train station is maybe a 15-minute walk, which sounds far but it’s actually perfect because you avoid all the tourist crowds that cluster around there. Plus, if you’re planning day trips to Florence or Venice (and you should), you’re not dealing with dragging luggage through the historic center. I stayed here in October when Bologna gets this gorgeous golden light in the afternoons, and honestly, just sitting in the small lobby area with a coffee and watching the neighborhood come alive was worth the trip. The 9.6 rating isn’t just numbers – it’s the kind of place where everything works the way it should, the wifi is reliable, and you feel like you’re experiencing the real Bologna, not some sanitized tourist version of it.

• Neat and modern apartment – Jana from Slovakia – 27 June 2025 (9/10)

  Location is fine, especially if you need to use public transport (it is 10-15 min. walk from the main train or coach station). There is also a bus stop just in front of the house for the city buses to the centre. The street is very busy and noisy so you have to keep the windows closed. The apartmet is large, clean, nicely furnished and decorated. The wifi and AC in each room were OK. Luca was very helpful and attentive, he tried to do his best. We also found some written information about the place which made our stay easier.
  
  What could be improved: We did not like breakfast – there were only some prepacked products, but there is a supermarket nearby so we bought what we wanted, e. g. fresh bread. Fortunatelly, they provide us with coffee, green tea, milk, butter, jam and mineral water. Luca told us, too, that it was not possible to cook in the apartment. In fact we didn´t plan to cook there, but I think the guests should know it in advance not after check in.

  Beautiful clear apartment with large rooms and bathroom. Great location 10-15 minutes from centre by walk, with lots of minimarkets and restaurations around. It was very quiet and calm place, felt like home. Self check-in was really easy and the host was so kind. He clarified everything about the accomodation in a call, despite of our late Check-in. We love everything about this trip, it was pleasure to be here, thank you for everything ♥️

  The property was easy to access from the train station, it was possible to walk to the city center, very clean, invested and kind host, cool self check-in system.

  Lovely, spacious and immaculately clean apartment. Close to the station and a pleasant walk to the historic centre of the city. Great selection of breakfast items to choose from with fresh fruits, cereals, yoghurt and milk included. Daily housekeeping was a welcome surprise. The personal and warm welcome received from Luca was appreciated. I would not hesitate to stay at Casa L & R again and can highly recommend.

  Breakfast was from a wonderful range of fruit, yoghurts, breads and cakes, with excellent coffee; with a view out over the roofs of Bologna and the morning sun coming up.

  Breakfast excellent, like everything else at Casa L&R; a superb flat, just up the road from Bologna Centrale, which we left with real regret. The only good thing is that we are going back in four days’ time!

  Spacious, clean and comfortable apartment. We appreciated the little extras like fresh fruit, biscuits and milk/yoghurt in the fridge. The location is great – about 10 minutes on foot to the train station and into the centre of Bologna. There are many restaurants in the surrounding area and a small Carrefour supermarket on the street below. This is a good choice for both long and short stays.

  Very nice and cozy place – feels like home. Highly recommended when you stay in Bologna. Walking distance to the Train Station and City Center. Bus stop is next to building as well. Large parking place is available close by (paid). Everything you might need is available in the flat. Owner is very nice and helpful
