You know what? I’ve stayed in a lot of Bologna hotels over the years, and Casa fuori Casa actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. The name literally means “home away from home” – and honestly, that’s not just marketing speak here. It’s tucked into Via Bertiera, which is this quiet residential street that most tourists never find, but it’s actually perfect because you’re away from the weekend noise around Piazza Maggiore while still being close enough to walk everywhere that matters.

The thing that struck me first was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about Bologna itself, not just the hotel. When I mentioned I was looking for good tortellini (because, come on, it’s Bologna), the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward the obvious tourist spots – he actually drew me a little map to this family place near Via del Pratello where locals actually eat. The rooms have this understated elegance that feels authentically Italian rather than trying too hard. Mine had these beautiful wooden shutters that actually worked properly, and the bathroom had heated floors – small detail, but you appreciate it on those damp February mornings. I mean, the whole place just felt thoughtfully put together without being fussy about it.

What really won me over was the breakfast situation. They serve it until 10:30 (thank god, because Italian dinner schedules are no joke), and they actually have proper espresso, not that hotel machine nonsense. Plus, they stock local pastries from a bakery somewhere in the Quadrilatero – I never did find out which one, but they were fantastic. The location is honestly ideal if you want to experience Bologna like someone who lives here. You’re a five-minute walk from the university area, so there’s always this gentle buzz of student life, but Via Bertiera itself is residential enough that you can actually sleep with the windows open. Parking was easier than I expected too – they have a few spots, and there’s street parking that doesn’t require a engineering degree to figure out. After three days, I felt like I was staying in a friend’s guest room in the best possible way. The 9.8 rating makes complete sense once you’re there.

  Perfect location just a few minutes walk from piazza Maggiore. The apartment was very clean and there were lots of refreshments for us to use which was a lovely surprise. It couldn’t be better. Emmanuel was very helpful with recommendations and nothing too much trouble.

  I had a fantastic experience staying at this apartment in Bologna. The location is perfect — just a short walk to the historic center, restaurants, and public transport.   The apartment had everything we needed and more. It has good WiFi to do business video calls if needed. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the bedroom very quiet at night, we had very peaceful sleep.

  Everything! Brilliant apartment. We were warmly welcomed, our bags carried for us. There was lots of juice and milk and water in the fridge, coffee pods for the machine and even breakfast supplies. The apartment was spotless and so beautifully presented and decorated. The bed is very very comfortable, the place is quiet and the pillows were perfect. We slept really well! The location is excellent – a few minutes walk from the main square (Piazza Maggiore) and literally backing on to the canal. Perfect spot, with many lovely cafes and restaurants around the corner. Easy 10 minute walk from the train. Great shower – not easy to find good water pressure in Italy, but this was excellent. Washing machine was very convenient. Hosts were lovely. This could be the best apartment we’ve ever stayed in, and we’ve travelled a lot. It is highly recommended and we will definitely stay here from now on whenever we visit Bologna. I strongly suggest you do too!

  The location is great, and the appartment is really confy. I felt directly at home! The kitchen is very practical and you have all you might need if you want to cook (oil, vinegar, sugar, salt…).
  But more than all these awesome points, Emmanuele is a great host, welcoming and helpful.
