Casa Drago, in Centro Storico Overview

You know what struck me first about Casa Drago? The entrance is tucked away on this narrow cobblestone street – Vicolo Posterla – that honestly, I walked past twice before finding it. But that’s kind of the magic of staying in Bologna’s Centro Storico, everything’s hidden in these medieval nooks that Google Maps seems to have a personal vendetta against. Once you’re inside though, it’s like stepping into someone’s stylish Italian home rather than a hotel. The lobby has this warm, amber lighting that makes the old stone walls feel cozy instead of cold, and there’s usually some subtle jazz playing that somehow never gets annoying. The staff genuinely seems to know the neighborhood – not just the touristy spots, but like, which osteria actually serves decent tortellini (spoiler: it’s not the one with English menus plastered outside) and when the morning market on Via Drapperie is worth fighting the crowds for fresh parmigiano samples.

The rooms are what I’d call “thoughtfully compact” – you’re not going to be doing yoga in there, but everything feels intentional. The beds are actually comfortable, which isn’t always a given in historic Italian hotels where charm sometimes trumps sleep quality. What I loved was how quiet it gets at night, despite being literally in the heart of everything. Bologna’s Centro Storico has this interesting rhythm where it’s bustling during aperitivo hour but settles into this peaceful hum after dinner. The bathroom situation is modern enough that you won’t be wrestling with mysterious European shower fixtures, and the Wi-Fi works reliably – crucial details that matter more than fancy marble when you’re trying to figure out train schedules to Florence. I mean, the whole point of staying here is being able to stumble out your door and be at Piazza Maggiore in three minutes, or duck into one of those incredible covered markets when it starts drizzling. The area around the hotel is pure Bologna – students from the university mixing with locals doing their shopping, the smell of fresh pasta and espresso drifting from every doorway, and these gorgeous porticoes that keep you dry while you wander around getting wonderfully lost.

Here’s the thing about Casa Drago – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, and that’s exactly why it works. The 4-star rating feels honest; you’re getting solid comfort and service without the pretense. Sometimes the elevator takes forever (it’s one of those charmingly slow European ones), and breakfast is good but not groundbreaking. But honestly, you’ll probably end up grabbing cornetti from the bar down the street anyway because that’s what Bologna mornings are about. The 7.9 rating makes sense too – it’s genuinely good without being perfect, and the imperfections somehow add to the authentic feel. If you want to actually experience Bologna instead of just visiting it, this is your spot. You’ll be close enough to everything that matters but tucked away enough to feel like you’ve discovered something special.

Reviews of Casa Drago, in Centro Storico

  • Superb – Claire from United Kingdom – 7 June 2025 (9/10)

Location was brilliant, we could pop back easily during the day.
Both the bedrooms were comfy, the beds are brilliant! wardrobe space good, and nicely dark for sleeping.
    Brilliant shower.
Kitchen was ok, we could make breakfast but missed a toaster.

What could be improved: Sofa bed was not comfy for an adult and lounge was far too light and noisy for sleeping. However we did find a fold out bed in the corner which was better, but still not ideal for a sleeping room.
Lounges was very nice during the day

  • Wir würden wiederkommen bei besseren Matratzen und ausgetauschten Schlafsofa! – Kirsten from Germany – 11 April 2024 (7/10)

  • Pleasant – Donatella from Italy – 3 April 2024 (6/10)

What could be improved: Divano letto rotto.
