Bologna Medieval Art Loft Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “Medieval Art Loft” in the name, I was expecting some cheesy theme hotel situation. But this place on Via Vinazzetti actually gets it right in a way that surprised me. It’s tucked into this quiet residential street about a 15-minute walk from the main train station, and you know what? That distance is actually perfect because you’re far enough from the tourist chaos but close enough that you can still stumble back after a night exploring Bologna’s incredible bar scene.
The building itself has this authentic medieval character – I’m talking original stone walls and arched doorways – but they’ve modernized it without going overboard. The rooms have these gorgeous exposed beams (real ones, not fake), and the art isn’t just random prints slapped on walls. It’s actually curated pieces that feel like they belong there. My room had this amazing view of a little courtyard where locals hang their laundry, which sounds mundane but honestly felt more authentic than staring at another tourist street. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious too, with one of those rainfall showers that actually has decent water pressure – you’d be amazed how many Italian hotels mess that up.
What really sold me on this place was the breakfast situation. They serve it in this vaulted room that used to be… well, I’m not entirely sure what it was originally, but it feels like eating in a small chapel. The spread isn’t huge, but everything’s quality – proper espresso, fresh pastries from a local bakery, and they actually have decent cheese and cold cuts. The staff knows their stuff too; the guy at reception gave me directions to this little osteria near Via del Pratello that I never would’ve found otherwise. And speaking of the staff – they’re genuinely helpful without being hovering, if that makes sense.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Bologna like someone who actually lives there. You’re a stone’s throw from Porta San Felice, and the morning walk into the city center takes you past actual neighborhood spots – the kind of bars where construction workers grab their morning coffee, not just tourist traps. Fair warning though: Italian hotels can be strict about noise, and the old building means sound carries, so maybe don’t plan on hosting your own party. But for exploring one of Italy’s most underrated food cities? This place gets it. The 8.6 rating isn’t just inflated booking site nonsense – it’s earned.

What could be improved: A welcome pack would have been appreciated.Lovely accommodation in a great location, not for light sleepers – George from United Kingdom – 31 May 2025 (8/10)
Very convenient location for exploring Bologna’s old town. A fantastically characterful place to stay.
What could be improved: Nighttime noise (the area is popular with students) was an issue, with noise making it hard to sleep on our first night until about 3am, with street cleaning then starting at 5am. We bought ear plugs from the pharmacy the next day which helped.A true Italian experience – Stephen from United Kingdom – 30 May 2025 (9/10)
If you ask why this is a truly amazing place to stay, the clues are in the name: Art and Loft. Though some are prints, there are numerous paintings on the wall and the living room is full of ornaments, good quality, antique style furniture, including cosy bookcases, a twelve seat dining table and even a piano. The pièce de resistance though is the fabulous painted ceiling which is just one magnificent fresco. The lofty, spacious feel in this apartment comes from its double height ceiling which incorporates the mezzanine bedroom, so the fresco is visible from virtually everywhere. Double height windows let light flood in, as well as the noise from the alley-like street below, which gives the whole place a very genuine Italian feel.
Though just adequate, the tiny kitchen area has only the very basics, but we didn’t mind as we had no intention of cooking anything with so many iconic Bolognaise cafés and restaurants just minutes away. The lovely master bathroom upstairs is let down, just a little bit, by the tiny shower, but there was a nice bath in the downstairs bathroom to compensate.
Unlike many images of apartments and hotels I have viewed on-line, those of the Bologna Art Loft are very accurate and don’t overplay the property at all. In fact, we were pleased to discover that there is privacy between the two sleeping areas and the downstairs fold-down settee bed is effectively in a separate room.
We didn’t meet our host Davide, but he was very attentive on WhatsApp and kindly left some espresso coffee capsules on our second day which made the whole experience that little bit more Italian.
What could be improved: Kitchen a bit basic and was not well stocked with glasses, crockery etc.Beautiful, comfortable and character-filled accommodation in a great location – Stephen from United States – 2 May 2025 (10/10)
The large apartment was beautiful, had great character, and was extremely comfortable. The large main bedroom, in a loft, had a nice dressing area and bath and an excellent bed. The living room was nicely furnished and a pleasant place to relax. The host, Davide, was extremely accommodating. He met us at the property to show us around and turn over the keys, was available via messaging for questions, called a taxi for us on departure, and called to make sure everything was in order.
What could be improved: Nothing about this excellent-value property will disappoint a guest. This was perfect! – Hunko from Poland – 9 January 2025 (10/10)
The stay was amazing. The flat is in the heart of the city, in the historic district. The interior reflects the spirit of Bologna and each detail contributes to the very special vibe. The apartment was super clean, I couldn’t be able to find any dust there. The glasses were shiny and the plates clean and aesthetic. Even though the furniture is historic, there were no unpleasant smell there. The beds are soooo comfortable and it was the first time when I slept so well in a rented place. The host is nice, polite and answered promptly on all the questions. Highly recommend this stay
What could be improved: The only thing I could mention is the noise outside but it is typical for the places located in the city center.A unique place with a luxury feeling – Leopold from France – 24 November 2024 (10/10)
The appartment is huge and simply fantastic. The furniture is high quality, the ceiling is beautiful and very high, the bed upstairs is very confy. The very central area is lively, with bars and restaurants and active student life.
We would love to come back!
