Art Hotel Commercianti Overview

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to Art Hotel Commercianti on Via de Pignattari – it’s this narrow medieval street that you’d probably miss if you weren’t looking for it. But that’s actually part of what makes this place so special. You’re literally in the heart of Bologna’s historic center, maybe a two-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but tucked away from all the tourist chaos.

The building itself is fascinating – it’s this 12th-century merchant’s house that they’ve turned into a boutique hotel, and you can feel the history in every stone. The lobby has these incredible frescoed ceilings that make you stop and stare (I mean, how often do you check into a hotel under medieval artwork?). The rooms are where things get interesting though. Each one is different, decorated with contemporary art that somehow works perfectly with the ancient architecture. My room had this massive wooden beam running across the ceiling and original brick walls, but the bathroom was completely modern with great water pressure – which, let’s be honest, matters more than you’d think after a long day wandering Bologna’s porticoes.

What really sold me on this place was the staff’s knowledge of the city. The guy at reception didn’t just give me a tourist map – he actually drew me a route to the best aperitivo spots and told me which osteria serves the most authentic tortellini in brodo (it’s not the famous one all the guidebooks mention, by the way). The location is genuinely perfect for exploring on foot. You can walk to the Two Towers in about five minutes, hit the university quarter just as easily, and when you want to escape the crowds, you’re right there in this quiet medieval enclave. The only downside? The street can get a bit echoey at night when people are walking back from dinner, but honestly, it adds to the authentic Bologna experience. Plus, by 11 PM it’s usually pretty quiet anyway. The 9.2 rating makes complete sense – this isn’t some sterile business hotel, it’s a place where art, history, and genuine Italian hospitality come together in a way that feels both sophisticated and completely natural.

Reviews of Art Hotel Commercianti

  • Fabulous hotel & friendly staff in perfect location. – Elaine from United Kingdom – 13 July 2025 (9/10)

Location perfect. Bologna is a beautiful walkable city with lots of restaurants, historic places to visit, & great shopping. Room & bed comfortable & kept very clean, air conditioning & blackout blinds for restful sleep. Lots of choice at breakfast. Staff extremely friendly & helpful. Would recommend.

  • A good hostelry in the centre of an old city – William from Australia – 13 July 2025 (9/10)

The location, right in the heart of the city, was quite tricky to find on your own in a rental car as it involves going into a pedestrian area and GPS was not so accurate. The hotel reception talked us to a point and then came to guide us personally. We managed to obtain a secure park in the hotel for our stay – book early. A good breakfast selection was provided in the dining room. With so many restaurants in Bologna one was spoilt for choice for lunch and dinner. The room was quite small, as we expect in the middle of an historic town, but well appointed. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The breakfast was also great and was a pleasant surprise for the variety on offer.
