But honestly, the moment I stepped into Urbanicooh Guidozagni, I realized this wasn’t your typical tourist trap. The name’s a mouthful, sure, but locals actually know this spot – it’s right in that sweet zone where you can stumble to Piazza Maggiore in about thirty seconds, yet you’re not drowning in the constant hum of tour groups that plague the hotels directly on the square.

The Piazza Maggiore view they promise? It’s legit. I mean, you’re literally overlooking the heart of Bologna from the first floor, watching the morning market vendors set up their stalls while sipping coffee that actually tastes like it came from somewhere other than a hotel lobby machine. What really sold me was the street itself – Via Clavature has this incredible energy because it’s where locals actually shop for food. There’s this amazing salumeria right downstairs, and honestly, the smells drifting up from the street level cheese shops and delis made my room feel like it was part of the neighborhood rather than just perched above it. The building has that solid, lived-in feel that comes from centuries of people actually living and working here, not just passing through with rolling suitcases.

I’ve stayed in plenty of four-star places that felt sterile, but this one gets the balance right. The rooms have character – original beams, real stonework, windows that open properly so you can hear the piazza come alive at dawn. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward (no forced upselling or resort fee nonsense), and the staff seemed genuinely familiar with Bologna beyond the usual tourist script. They pointed me toward aperitivo spots that weren’t in my guidebook and gave me the real story on which osterie actually serve decent tortellini versus the tourist versions. The 8.9 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be flashy or Instagram-perfect, it’s just solidly good at what it does. Fair warning though: if you’re hoping for a quiet retreat, remember you’re basically sleeping above one of Bologna’s busiest food streets. But honestly? That energy is exactly why you’d want to stay here. You’re not just visiting Bologna, you’re temporarily living in it.

  Right in heart of Bologna old town on the edge of the maze of alleys packed w great food and drink comprising the old ghetto off Piazza Maggiore, a large and cosy one bedroom flat with superb modern shower & wc and a simple but very well equipped kitchen and large comfy double bedroom.
  
  What could be improved: On Saturday nights the students hang out in Piazza Maggiore until the small hours and the apartment cannot screen out their singing and laughing. Could also have done with a couple more bigger pillows.
