Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “Appartamento Biba” on Strada Maggiore, I thought it might be one of those cookie-cutter places that just slaps “apartment” in the name. But you know what? This place actually gets it right in ways that surprised me.

The location is… well, it’s sort of perfect if you know Bologna at all. Strada Maggiore isn’t some tourist trap street – it’s where actual Bolognese people go about their daily business, which means you’re walking past real bakeries (there’s this incredible one about two blocks down that opens at 6 AM and the smell will wake you up in the best way), genuine osterie, and those narrow side streets that lead to hidden piazzas most tourists never find. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but you’re not dealing with the constant buzz of tour groups right outside your window. The building itself has that weathered elegance that Bologna does so well – you know, where the facade looks like it’s been there for centuries but everything inside actually works properly.

What really won me over was how they’ve handled the apartment setup. It’s not trying to be a hotel pretending to be an apartment, or an apartment pretending to be a hotel – it’s something in between that actually makes sense. The spaces feel lived-in without being cluttered, and honestly, the kitchen situation is better than most places I’ve stayed. You can actually cook a proper meal if you want to, which is great because the Mercato delle Erbe is just a short walk away and the produce there is… well, it’s Bologna, so it’s incredible. The Wi-Fi doesn’t drop out every twenty minutes like so many places in these old buildings, and – this might sound minor but it’s not – the shower pressure is consistently good. I’ve learned not to take that for granted in Italy.

The staff really knows their stuff too. Not in that over-rehearsed concierge way, but more like they’re locals who happen to work there and genuinely want you to have a good time. They’ll tell you which aperitivo spots get too crowded after 7 PM, or where to find parking (because let’s be real, driving in Bologna’s centro storico is its own adventure). During my stay, they mentioned that the street can get a bit lively on weekend nights – it’s not rowdy, just… spirited in that Italian way where people are actually enjoying themselves rather than just getting drunk.

The 8.9 rating makes total sense when you experience it. It’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but it’s the kind of place where you settle in quickly and start feeling like you’re living in Bologna rather than just visiting it. The morning light comes in at just the right angle, there’s always someone interesting walking by on the street below, and you’re positioned perfectly to explore the city on foot without feeling like you’re staying in a museum. It’s got that particular Bologna charm – unpretentious, authentic, and somehow both relaxed and energizing at the same time.
