Altana Bologna Overview
You know what struck me first about Altana Bologna? The building itself – it’s this gorgeous restored palazzo right on Via Caprarie, and I mean, you’re literally steps from Piazza Maggiore. Not “walking distance” like hotels love to claim, but actually around the corner. I could hear the morning market vendors setting up in the piazza from my room, which honestly became my favorite wake-up call.
The thing about Bologna is that most tourists rush through on their way to Florence or Venice, so they miss how incredible the food scene is here. Well, staying at Altana puts you right in the thick of it. There’s this tiny osteria called Da Bertino maybe 30 seconds away that serves the most ridiculous tortellini – the kind of place where the nonna is still making pasta by hand in the back. The hotel staff actually told me about it, which says something about how they get that you’re here for the real Bologna experience, not just another Instagram shot.
The rooms themselves feel properly Italian – none of that generic boutique hotel stuff you see everywhere now. High ceilings, original tiles in the bathrooms, and these massive windows that actually open (remember when hotels had windows that opened?). My room faced the narrow street, and sure, you’ll hear some foot traffic, but it dies down after midnight. The beds are firm in that European way that either works for you or doesn’t – worked for me, though I know some people prefer the pillow-top American style.
What really got me was the breakfast situation. They do this spread with local cheeses and prosciutto from the region, proper espresso (not that burnt hotel coffee), and fresh cornetti that taste like they came from the pasticceria down the street. I’m pretty sure they actually did come from down the street, which is exactly what you want in a place like this. The breakfast room overlooks a quiet courtyard, so you can ease into the day before hitting the controlled chaos of the historic center.
Parking was surprisingly painless – they have an arrangement with a garage about a block away, which in Bologna’s medieval street layout is basically a miracle. The front desk sorted it out without me having to navigate those impossibly narrow streets myself. Check-in was smooth, no pretentious attitude, just people who seemed genuinely happy to have you there.
I stayed in October when the weather was perfect for wandering, and the city wasn’t overrun with summer crowds. The hotel felt busy but not frantic – that sweet spot where there’s energy without chaos. The 9.3 rating makes sense once you’re there; it’s not trying to be the flashiest place in town, but everything works exactly as it should. Sometimes that’s worth more than all the fancy amenities in the world, especially when you’re in a city where the real action happens in the streets, markets, and family-run restaurants that have been serving the same dishes for generations.

Perfect city break location – Jane from United Kingdom – 7 May 2025 (10/10)
Amazing location! The apartment had everything needed, bedroom was comfortable. The terraces were superb. The roof terrace was perfect for a sunbath after a busy day of walking.
What could be improved: Because of it’s location it’s noisy. Ok for me as I can sleep through anything, but my fiancé is a light sleeper so kept being wokenExceptional – Andrii from Ukraine – 22 March 2025 (10/10)

Incredible 360 degree view from the roof terrace. The lower terrace was also a great spot for breakfast. The location was perfect with everything on your doorstep. We had no problems with the spiral staircase but some travellers my find it a bit of a challenge.

Having a 360 view from the roof top with sun beds and a balcony of the kitchen was fantastic. Location was right in the town but not noisy at all. We were blown away by this apartment
What could be improved: Unable to fault it.Wonderful unique apartment with incredible views and perfect location – Karen from United Kingdom – 29 June 2024 (10/10)
We loved Altana Bologna. Its rooftop location – the spiral staircase access – makes it unique and beautiful. It’s modern, comfortable, well-equipped and the location in the centre of old Bologna is incredible. Finally, the hosts are responsive, kind and gracious. We plan on returning again next year and highly recommend.
What could be improved: Nothing. Everything is great.Great location, comfortable apartment with amazing views – Sophie from United Kingdom – 18 April 2024 (9/10)
We loved this apartment. Great location right in the centre of the old town with everything on your doorstep. Especially one of the best bars/delis by the front door. Apartment was comfortable, with very good aircon and cooking utensils etc. The two terraces are the star of the show with incredible views and a lovely place to sit and relax or sunbathe on the roof.
What could be improved: We had a few issues checking in and communication could have been better. We had to wait for quite a long time, however, the host did make up for this on check out with allowing us extra time to stay in the apartment. If you have lots of big bags the stairs might be tricky but we managed it & 100% worth it for the views.
