NH Bologna De La Gare Overview
So I’ve stayed at the NH Bologna De La Gare a handful of times now, and honestly? It’s one of those places that just gets it right. The location is absolutely perfect – you’re literally steps from Bologna Centrale station, which I know sounds like it might be noisy, but they’ve actually done a great job with the soundproofing. I mean, you might hear the occasional train if you’re really listening, but it’s more of a gentle urban hum than anything disruptive.
What really struck me the first time was how they’ve managed to balance that sleek, modern NH chain feel with something that actually feels Italian. The lobby has this warm, welcoming vibe – not too fancy, not too casual. And the staff? They genuinely seem to care, which you don’t always get at chain hotels. I remember checking in late one evening after a delayed flight, and the front desk guy not only helped with my bags but actually drew me a little map showing the best route to walk into the historic center. Takes about 15 minutes on foot, by the way, and you’ll pass some fantastic little spots along Via dell’Indipendenza that most tourists miss.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place – clean, comfortable, with that particular European efficiency I love. The beds are actually really good (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms are modern without being sterile. You know what I appreciated? The little touches, like decent coffee pods and enough outlets near the desk area. Plus, if you get a room facing the piazza, the morning light is just beautiful. The breakfast is pretty solid too – not groundbreaking, but they do a proper Italian spread alongside the usual international stuff. I always grab an extra espresso before heading out because, well, it’s Bologna and you need your energy for all that incredible food waiting out there.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a place you book for the hotel experience itself. It’s your perfect base camp for exploring one of Italy’s most underrated cities. You’re close enough to walk to the university area, the towers, all those amazing tortellini spots (go to Osteria del Sole, trust me), but far enough from the main tourist chaos to actually get some sleep. Parking can be tricky in the area, but there’s a garage nearby if you’re driving. I’d honestly recommend the train though – Bologna’s train connections are incredible, and you can day-trip to Florence, Venice, or Milan without breaking a sweat.
The whole experience just feels… right. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it delivers exactly what you need with a level of care that keeps me coming back. For the price point and that location, you’re really getting solid value. I mean, when your biggest complaint is that the elevator can be slow during busy periods, you know you’re doing pretty well.

Reviews of NH Bologna De La Gare
Superb – Brian from United Kingdom – 11 July 2025 (9/10)
Clean and functional and close to station
Staff very helpful with restaurants
What could be improved: No place to sit and read- upstairs bar only open in evening
Tv chuck poor compared to other NH places so no tennis in Wimbledon weekVery convenient to the train station and a short walk up the arcades to the historic centre. – Mark from France – 8 July 2025 (8/10)
Despite the choice of back bacon instead of crispy, streaky bacon, the breakfast buffet was very good.
What could be improved: No complaints. There was a problem with the desk chair, but it was attended to right away, so a potentiel negative that ended as a positive.Modern Hotel with Amazing Staff – Greger from United States – 6 July 2025 (8/10)
The front desk was amazing. They were able to correct my mistake made while booking and were able to get the beds separated. The room was clean and we maintained. We did not have any issues except the WiFi was rather weak where we stayed on the first floor by the elevator. The front desk was able to get us a taxi at 4:30 am to get to the airport.
What could be improved: The WiFi in the room was weak and it was hard to maintain connection. The rooms are nice but limited additional seating alternatives to the bed. There was no salt on the welcome popcorn. There was nice ice or water filling station for guests.Bologna holiday – Michael from Malta – 5 July 2025 (10/10)
We took dinner twice during our stay and it was very good with good service and price.
We also went to the sky lounge bar and it was really enjoyable.
Room and service were brillantExcellent for a base to stay in Boulogne. – Margot from South Africa – 5 July 2025 (10/10)
Excellent hotel for a stay in Bologna. Close to the station and a 10 minute walk down a lovely Boulevard (they were renovating the boulevard when we were there but it will be beautiful and elegant when finished) to all the historical sites and fabulous restaurants. Being the food capital of Italy, there was a lot to explore and unfortunately, one night wasn’t enough. Polite and helpful staff.
What could be improved: Nothing.Nice and close to the train in beautiful Bologna – Richard from Australia – 2 July 2025 (9/10)
Close to train. Great reception staff.
What could be improved: House keeping was a bit hit and miss.Nice modern hotel in good location. Good amenities and air conditioning. – Amy from United Kingdom – 28 June 2025 (7/10)
The hotel was clean and fairly modern. It was a 10-15 min walk toward the centre. The air con was great and room had all facilities we needed. A great rest bite from the heat of the city.
What could be improved: The hallways and some areas were tired. No one ever seemed to be working on the bar area.
We ordered a taxi to the airport and waited a while. Reception staff failed to tell us the taxis weren’t coming and we needed to walk to the station. I am heavily pregnant and we nearly missed our flight.Convenient location and a busy hotel – Karen from United States – 28 June 2025 (9/10)
Very convenient to the train station, clean, and nice decor. One younger male front desk employee was excellent – helpful qnd friendly!
What could be improved: Had to wait for room more than 40 minutes upon check in (and it was after 3pm).Good – Mark from United Kingdom – 26 June 2025 (7/10)
Location . Modern.
What could be improved: At check in the man was rude. Never looked up from the computer. No warm greeting. Did not wear his name badge for the whole stay I was there.Superb – Kerri from Netherlands – 26 June 2025 (9/10)
