You know what caught me off guard about this place? The elevator. I mean, you’re in this historic palazzo on Via Altabella – one of those narrow medieval streets that makes you wonder how delivery trucks even manage – and then you step into this surprisingly modern lift that whisks you up to what honestly feels like a secret rooftop world.

The apartment itself is actually pretty clever. Someone clearly thought about how to make the most of Bologna’s strict building codes, because while you’re technically in the city center (like, seriously, you can walk to Piazza Maggiore in maybe four minutes), you’ve got this panoramic terrace that makes you feel like you’re floating above all the red-tiled chaos below. The terrace is the real star here – I spent way too much time out there with my morning coffee, watching the locals navigate the morning rush on their bikes and scooters. You can see the towers from up there, and honestly, the view at sunset is pretty spectacular, especially when the church bells start going off around 7 PM. The apartment itself feels more like a really well-designed pied-à-terre than a typical hotel room. The kitchen is actually functional (rare in Bologna’s historic center), and the bathroom has one of those rainfall showers that actually works properly. I appreciated the little touches – good wifi, decent air conditioning (crucial in summer), and blackout curtains that actually block out the streetlights from Via Altabella.

Location-wise, you’re in the thick of things but not overwhelmed by it. Via Altabella is just busy enough to feel lively but not so crazy that you can’t sleep – though fair warning, weekends can get a bit noisy with the university crowd spilling out from the bars near Via del Pratello. The morning market sounds from Mercato delle Erbe drift over around 8 AM, which is actually kind of charming. You’re literally a two-minute walk from some of Bologna’s best osterie – I mean, Osteria del Sole is practically around the corner, and if you know Bologna, you know that’s a big deal. Parking is… well, it’s Bologna, so forget about driving unless you absolutely have to. But the train station is close enough for a reasonable taxi ride, and once you’re there, everything you want to see is walkable. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if you’re the type who values having a proper home base rather than just a place to crash. The terrace alone makes it worth the slightly higher price point, and the 8.7 rating feels about right – it’s not perfect (the street can be a bit echo-y at night), but it’s definitely one of those places that gets Bologna right.

  AltaBella is one of the most special places I’ve stayed. The medieval beams, the cozy bed, and skylight views of all the towers Mel this place unlike any other.

  Very nice apartment situated under the roof. Therefore very private and quiet. Clean and cosy. Nicely furnished and decorated with a lot of space and own terrace. Very good location and nicely equipped kitchen. Access is made very easy.

The host replied quickly when we addressed him but nobody showed up to fix it while we were waiting and even after. We felt that this was very unpleasant and is not what one would expect from a professional host that takes care.

  Nice spacious apartment with lots of character very centrally located near to everything you need including the main sights and restaurants. The roof terrace was an added bonus. I would definitely stay again when visiting Bologna.

  Right in the heart of the city and easy walking to the main attractions of Bologna.
  The apartment is attractively and authentically converted, with an outdoor space to sit out that is very welcome to return to for a drink after a day of sightseeing.
  Staff were very helpful and kind when we needed anything.
  
  What could be improved: Nothing that I didn't like about the apartment but there is no category in the reviews for helpful hints so I included these thoughts in this section.
  If needing to use the sofa bed, forewarn the property manager as additional bedding is not stored in the apartment.
  The bathroom is accessed off the main bedroom so if using the sofa bed that person(s) will need to pass through the bedroom to get there.
  The apartment is in the attic of the building and there isn't an elevator. If your mobility were compromised accessing the apartment would be challenging.
