8 Colonne Apartments Overview
Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of Bologna apartments, and 8 Colonne honestly surprised me. The name literally means “8 columns” in Italian, which you’ll figure out pretty quickly when you see the beautiful arched entrance – it’s one of those details that makes you feel like you’re actually in Italy, not just some generic European city. The location on Via Otto Colonne is sort of tucked away in this quiet residential pocket, but here’s the thing – you’re still smack in the middle of the historic center. I mean, you can walk to Piazza Maggiore in about eight minutes, and trust me, I timed it because I’m obsessive like that.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep the old-world charm without making you feel like you’re roughing it. The apartments themselves are spacious (and I mean actually spacious, not “cozy” which is hotel-speak for tiny), with these gorgeous high ceilings and original features that remind you this building has some serious history. The kitchenettes are well-equipped too – I actually cooked a few meals there using ingredients from the Mercato delle Erbe, which is maybe a ten-minute walk away. The staff was incredibly helpful when I had questions about the neighborhood, and they gave me this hand-drawn map with all their local recommendations that was way better than anything I found online.
Here’s what I really appreciated: the street is quiet enough that you can sleep with windows open (Bologna can get pretty warm in summer), but you’re not isolated from the action. You know how some places are either too loud or too dead? This hits that sweet spot. The building has character – you’ll hear the occasional footstep on the stairs, but it’s not disruptive. And honestly, there’s something really authentic about staying in a residential building where you might bump into actual Bolognese residents in the courtyard. The only minor thing I’d mention is that parking can be a bit tricky if you’re driving – the historic center has restrictions, but the staff will sort you out with options nearby. Overall, if you want to feel like you’re living in Bologna rather than just passing through, this place delivers on that promise without any of the usual apartment rental headaches.
