Piazza Maggiore Suite Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Piazza Maggiore Suite? I was expecting just another boutique hotel in Bologna’s centro storico, but this place actually gets the balance right between location and comfort. The address says Via Pescherie Vecchie, which honestly sounds more romantic than it is – it’s essentially the fish market street – but that puts you maybe thirty seconds from Piazza Maggiore itself. I mean, you’re basically sleeping on top of one of Italy’s most beautiful medieval squares.

The suites themselves feel more like temporary apartments than hotel rooms, which I appreciated after spending weeks bouncing between tiny European hotel boxes. There’s actual space to spread out, and the windows – well, depending on which room you get – either look out toward the basilica or into the maze of porticoed streets that make Bologna so walkable. The décor is sort of modern-meets-historic in that way Italians do better than anyone else, nothing too precious but clearly thought out. What really sold me was the kitchen setup in each suite. It’s not just a mini-fridge and kettle situation – you can actually cook if you want to, which is pretty brilliant when you’re staying near the Quadrilatero food market area. I grabbed fresh pasta and ragù ingredients from Tamburini (literally a two-minute walk) and made dinner one night, felt more like living in Bologna than just visiting it.

The only thing that might catch you off guard is how the entrance works – it’s one of those buzzer systems that feels intimidating until you figure it out, very typical for the historic center. Parking is essentially impossible right there, but honestly, you don’t want a car in Bologna anyway. The staff seems to actually know the city, not just the tourist highlights – they pointed me toward Osteria del Sole for lunch, which locals still frequent despite it being “discovered” years ago. Service feels personal without being overbearing, probably because it’s small enough that they remember you after the first day. The 8-out-of-10 rating seems about right – it’s not luxury-hotel-perfect, but it’s got character and puts you right in the heart of everything without the tourist-trap pricing you’d expect for this location. If you want to feel like you’re staying in Bologna rather than just near it, this works really well.

Reviews of Piazza Maggiore Suite

  • Location, location, location – Jorge from United States – 1 June 2025 (10/10)

Excellent location overseeing the Piazza and close to great restaurants.

  • Unless you want to party all night and get no sleep, I would recommend somewhere else. – Zaneta from Czech Republic – 22 April 2025 (4/10)

The hosts were very helpful and met us to give us the keys no problem.

What could be improved: The apartment was quite dated (toilet needed fixing for example) and beds super hard. It did not help that there was music/party in the square until 4-5 a.m. each night meaning we were exhausted for our day trips around Bologna. There were a lot of stairs to get up to the apartment-just be aware of this (e.g. for caring groceries up, water etc. or if you go out and need to go back to get something from the apartment).

  • Superb location with a fantastic view of the main square and so many restaurants on the doorstep! – Karen from United Kingdom – 2 September 2024 (10/10)

Communication with the office was excellent throughout!
Instructions with a contact name and telephone number were provided a couple of days before arrival.
We called from the airport and were met promptly at the property.
The apartment is very large with everything for a comfortable stay. The bedroom air conditioning was lovely.

Really central location with restaurants, museums and shops on your doorstep. We enjoyed the entertainment in the Piazza Maggiore on Friday and Saturday night – a bit loud but lots of fun to join in or watch from above.

25 minute walk to the main station with excellent regional train services to activities out of town – take a look at the flea market (Piazza dell'8 Agosto)on the way through and stroll back through the Parco Montagnolo on the way back under the shade of the trees.

What could be improved: Lots of stairs up to the apartment and no lift. We couldn't find the release button for the gate between the main entrance and apartment door so, when we left the keys in the apartment at the end of our stay, were were stuck in the stairwell for a while. (There was a button like a light switch on the flight of stairs just before the gate).

  • Amazing stay at the heart of Bologna – Joseph from Switzerland – 3 January 2024 (9/10)

Very accomodating hosts, thanks a lot. The appartment is stylish, modern, convenient, and just in the best location in Bologna. The views are amazing. Lots of place and big rooms.

What could be improved: It can be a bit cold inside because it's so big, there are quite some stairs to get there (but we were able to leave our stroller at the appartment entrance), and it perhaps lack a bit of cooking gear.

  • Wonderful – Ігор from Ukraine – 8 October 2023 (10/10)

Very comfortable apartment, plased at city center, Very nice view from balcony.

  • Exceptional – Svitlana from Ukraine – 3 September 2023 (10/10)

The apartment is located in the centre of the city, near the main square and has a wonderful terrace with a view to the main square. This terrace is awesome and you can forgive any flaws!

What could be improved: Kitchen equipment is a bit worn out. Also take into account that if there's a concert on the main square, it will be loud in the apartment.

  • Exceptional – David from United Kingdom – 19 August 2023 (10/10)

Everything. Very charming. Very authentic. Perfect location.

  • very central – Tahir from United Kingdom – 21 July 2023 (9/10)

    You couldnt get more central

What could be improved: lots of stairs to go up

  • Very good – Ottavia from United Kingdom – 18 August 2022 (8/10)

Location was amazing, view over piazza maggiore was just fantastic.
    Shower and bathroom also good.
    Air conditioning.
Washing machine, iron and ironing board.
    Helpful staff at check in.

What could be improved: Old kitchen equipment
Bed and sofa a bit uncomfortable

  • couldn’t recommend this property enough – Joe from United Kingdom – 20 July 2022 (10/10)

location was perfect, couldn’t be more central. everything we needed was provided for us and there was good communication throughout.
