You know what hit me first about Steam House Room & Breakfast? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – this converted 19th-century building has this wonderful old radiator system that gives off these gentle heating sounds that somehow feel cozy rather than annoying. I mean, you’re right on Via Mascarella, which honestly is one of those Bologna streets that tourists miss but locals love – it’s got this perfect mix of residential calm and just enough action to feel alive.

The location is pretty brilliant, actually. You’re maybe a seven-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but here’s the thing – you’re positioned just right to skip the main tourist crowds while still being close enough to everything that matters. There’s this little osteria literally around the corner (I think it’s called Osteria del Sole?) where you can grab incredible mortadella, and the morning walk to the university district is gorgeous if you’re into that sort of wandering. The building itself has character without being fussy about it – thick walls that actually keep street noise down, which surprised me since Bologna can get pretty lively at night. The breakfast setup is more thoughtful than most places this size; they’ve got local stuff like proper parmigiano and prosciutto di Parma, but also accommodate the international crowd without feeling like they’re trying too hard.

What really works here is the scale – it’s small enough that the staff (there’s usually this guy Marco who seems to know everyone’s coffee preferences by day two) actually remember you, but not so tiny that you feel like you’re staying in someone’s spare room. The rooms themselves are honestly well-done – clean lines, good lighting, and they’ve managed to fit proper-sized bathrooms even in what’s clearly an older building. The 4-star rating feels right; it’s not luxury, but everything works well and thoughtfully. I stayed here in late September when Bologna gets that perfect weather, and the windows open wide enough to get real air circulation, which matters more than you’d think. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building, parking is… well, it’s Bologna, so park where you can find it, but they’ll give you decent advice about the blue zones. The 8.5 rating makes sense to me – there’s nothing groundbreaking happening here, but it’s the kind of place where small things are done right, and honestly, that’s what you want when you’re trying to enjoy a city like Bologna rather than just crash somewhere.

  Great location and yet remarkably quiet given the bustle on the street outside. Spacious suite and comfortable. Helpful staff although never met them as all communication through WhatsApp. Communication was very good.

  Room was very spacious for 4 of us, as was the ensuite bathroom. Beds very comfortable and the decor is attractive. The street was busy during our stay but once the windows are closed you can hear nothing! Management was very kind and allowed us to store luggage after check out, which made everything so much easier.
  It's a good location, walkable to city centre and with lots of shops, restaurants and bars within easy reach.
  There is a wonderful icecream shop a couple of doors down 😊

  This place is centrally located and easy to find. The desk staff was wonderful and allowed us to leave our bags as we got there before check in. The room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very generous and delicious! Highly recommend.
