San Michele Apartments by Wonderful Italy Overview
You know what really caught me off guard about San Michele Apartments? The location is absolutely perfect, but not in that obvious touristy way everyone talks about. I mean, sure, you’re right on Piazza San Michele – which honestly feels more like a neighborhood square where locals actually hang out rather than some postcard scene. The apartments themselves are in this lovely old building, and when I say piano terra, we’re talking ground floor units that feel surprisingly spacious and bright for being at street level.
What I really loved about staying here was how quickly you realize you’re in the heart of real Bologna. Step outside and you’re maybe a seven-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore, but here’s the thing – you’ll probably get distracted by the little osteria around the corner or that amazing salumeria on Via San Vitale where the owner actually remembers your order after the second visit. The Sant’Orsola hospital is pretty close by too, which might sound weird to mention, but it actually means this whole area has that authentic residential vibe with people going about their daily lives. The apartments themselves are well-maintained – I’d say that 4-star rating feels about right, maybe even a bit conservative. Everything worked properly (always a relief in older Italian buildings), and the kitchenette situation was actually functional enough to handle real cooking, not just reheating takeout.
Honestly, the 8.2 rating makes sense when you factor in the whole experience. It’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but it’s genuinely comfortable and the kind of place where you can settle in for a few days without feeling like you’re living out of a suitcase. The check-in process was straightforward – none of that hunting around for keys or cryptic instructions you sometimes get with apartment rentals. Noise levels were totally reasonable, even though you’re right in the city center. I mean, you’ll hear some street sounds during the day, but nothing that kept me up at night. And parking – well, it’s Bologna, so you’re probably better off without a car anyway, but there are options nearby if you need them. The whole San Michele area just has this great energy where you can grab groceries at the market, sit in a proper café where they know how to make coffee, and still be close enough to all the major sights that you’re not spending half your day on logistics. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re actually staying in Bologna rather than just visiting it.

This first level apartment is very close to everything I could've wanted to see in Bologna by foot. It was clean and there are a lot of restaurants for all price ranges. There is a grocery mart called PAM only 5 minutes away. I stayed for 28 days in order to attend a language immersion school in the city. Bologna is absolutely one of the coolest cities I've been to in Italy but that was because I stayed there for several weeks instead of just a couple of days. This whole are is known for food so be warned that you could gain a few pounds; I did…and with joy! Sadly, I was there in May when the entire country had a lot of rainstorms with Emilia-Romagna being especially affected by flooding, a few deaths and thousands of people having to relocate. The people showed their strength of spirit throughout these hard times!
To finish up, I am already trying to figure out how to get back to my language school here in Bologna though I literally just landed back on US soil yesterday (June 8, 2023)!
What could be improved: Being an American, I had difficulty figuring out the washer/drying combo machine. The times listed are not accurate so I ended up shrinking a new pair of jeans after it was in the wash for four HOURS! The other quirk was that in order to have the towel warmer on in the bathroom, the heat had to be turned on for the bedroom. I wanted a first floor apt since there are no elevators. This means that noise could be coming from the neighbors above and to the sides. These apts are all short-term stay so there could be some very noisy and messy neighbors. They won't care; they may only be there for the weekend. The other annoying thing is that my apt is the only one with a step so I would open my door to find kids sitting on it smoking.
People are traveling a LOT to Europe with Italia being a main destination. You just have to be mentally prepared for the crowds. Another odd thing is that Bologna has changed how garbage is to be disposed. Yes, there are receptacles in the parking area for recyclables BUT for general garbage, only owners are allowed to have a passcode to access the large garbage bin! I was told by a local that it was best to just leave my garbage beside that bin instead of dumping it into a recycle container.Good – Siri from Sweden – 14 May 2023 (7/10)
great location
What could be improved: damp, uncomfortable bedsSuperb – Gertler from Germany – 29 November 2022 (9/10)
Great location und very nice and clean apartment, very comfy bed as well. Our local contact Abu has been great and very helpful when we had a problem with the heating in the bathroom.
What could be improved: Some more kitchen appliances (e.g. Bottle opener) would be nice.
