Rooftop Garden Overview

You know what struck me first about Rooftop Garden? The name actually makes sense – and I mean that in the best way possible. So many hotels have these flowery names that have nothing to do with reality, but when you’re up there looking out over Bologna’s terracotta rooftops with actual greenery around you, it clicks. The place sits on Via de’ Carbonesi, which honestly sounds more intimidating than it is – it’s this quiet little street in Saragozza that feels properly Italian without being touristy.

The thing about staying here is that you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the chaos around Piazza Maggiore that you can actually sleep. I mean, you can walk to the centro storico in maybe fifteen minutes, but you’re not dealing with the late-night crowds stumbling back from the bars. The building itself has that solid, lived-in feeling that Italian places do so well – thick walls that actually keep sound out (thank god), and the kind of stone floors that stay cool even when it’s blazing outside. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too, none of that overly formal hotel theater that makes you feel like you’re interrupting something important.

What really sets this place apart, though, is how it feels like someone who actually lives in Bologna designed it. The rooms have these little touches – proper reading lights, outlets where you need them, windows that open wide enough to let in the evening breeze. And honestly, that rooftop space lives up to the hype. It’s not huge or fancy, but there’s something about having your morning coffee up there, looking out over the city waking up, that makes you feel like you’re in on a secret. The staff seems to get that too – they’re not hovering or overly chatty, just genuinely helpful when you need them. I asked about parking (because let’s be real, driving in Bologna is an adventure) and they sorted it without making me feel like an idiot for not knowing the ZTL rules. The whole experience felt… I don’t know, authentic? Like you’re staying somewhere that happens to be a hotel rather than a place that’s trying really hard to feel like hospitality. That 9.6 rating makes sense when you’re there – it’s not perfect in some sterile way, but it’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to actually experience a city instead of just passing through it.

  • Great Appartement in nice location – Sebastian from Germany – 10 July 2025 (10/10)

Special and very good Appartement in perfect spot. We had a great time there for five nights and would book it again.

What could be improved: It was not so easy to take a shower since there only is a bathtub and no showerhead attachment.

  • Amazing – Harald from Norway – 26 May 2025 (10/10)

Amazing location, feels like we were living in a museum. Smells amazing.

  • We really enjoyed our stay in the Rooftop Garden and hope to return in the future. – Noreen from Ireland – 10 October 2024 (9/10)

The place was amazing! The decor, the comfy bed, the very central location, the apartment was so quiet and peaceful. Spotlessly clean. Very attentive host.

What could be improved: I would have preferred a proper shower to a bath.

  • Exceptional place to stay – Martin from United States – 25 September 2024 (10/10)

The apartment was beautiful with marble floors and all the amenities needed. The outdoor seating area was very pleasant. The location couldn’t be better. Short walk to the center and most attractions. Very quiet. Our host, Vittorio, was exceptional. He was responsive and very helpful with a few problems we had during our stay. I highly recommend this property for a stay in Bologna.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • An unforgettable stay in a stunning house – Christina from France – 24 September 2024 (10/10)

An incredibly beautiful house—you can't imagine how stunning it is until you see it yourself. The host was exceptional, very helpful and friendly, making us feel right at home. The little outdoor space was perfect for breakfast, so peaceful and beautiful. Highly recommend for a delightful stay!

What could be improved: Everything was perfect. Great attention to detail.

  • If you want location, a spacious apartment with a cute garden patio, and a friendly & helpful host, this is your pic – Amanda from Australia – 20 September 2024 (10/10)

This apartment was in a great location, walking distance to Bologna’s cafes, restaurants and culture. Plenty of room to spread out here as well.
I would also like to mention, our host was extremely helpful with all his local recommendations, and even ordered us a taxi when we were struggling to use the local taxi app. He definitely went above and beyond with his hospitality.

What could be improved: It wasn’t a big deal, but there is no shower, just a bath with a shower hose. Would be perfect if a shower head and curtain was installed as well.

  • Wonderful accommodation in a very central location – Marion from United Kingdom – 5 September 2024 (10/10)

We fell in love with this place and everything in it! The smell in the apartment as you entered was so lovely, the decor was old but arty, and we wished we could have stayed longer. The rooftop garden was the icing on the cake!!! Vittorio was an exemplary host who was very helpful before we even arrived. The location is perfect for central Bologna shopping, sight seeing, amazing food and more. Its close to the train station and only 20-25 minutes to the airport (traffic dependant of course). We will definitely go back when we visit our new favourite city! Ps, it has a great hairdryer!!!

What could be improved: The lack of a shower! A bath is mentioned in the description, but it is quite deep, and even though we are fit, it was a bit of a struggle to get out of as there are no handles to help you. There is a shower head but keeping the spray inside the bath is a bit tricky!
