Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Ricordo del mare (which translates to “memory of the sea,” how lovely is that?), I was a bit skeptical about finding a proper seaside-themed hotel smack in the middle of Bologna. But walking up Via Podgora, you actually start to get it. This isn’t some cheesy nautical tourist trap – it’s more like someone who deeply loves the coast decided to bring that feeling inland, and somehow made it work beautifully.

The location is what really sold me, though. Via Podgora sits in this lovely residential pocket that feels properly Bolognese – you know, where actual locals live and work – but you’re still close enough to everything that matters. I mean, you can walk to the train station in about fifteen minutes, which is clutch if you’re planning day trips to Florence or Venice. But honestly, what I loved most was how quiet it gets at night. No drunk university students stumbling past (Bologna’s got plenty of those closer to the center), just the gentle hum of neighborhood life. The parking situation is actually manageable too, which anyone who’s driven in Italian cities will tell you is basically a miracle.

What really sets this place apart is the attention to those little details that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The staff – and I swear this isn’t just because they were nice to me – genuinely know the neighborhood. They pointed me toward this incredible little osteria just three blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned wanting to see some non-touristy parts of Bologna, they didn’t just hand me a generic map. They actually sat down and sketched out a walking route through Quartiere Navile that felt like discovering a secret version of the city. The rooms themselves have this understated elegance – nothing flashy, but everything works exactly as it should. Good water pressure, beds that don’t creak, and windows that actually keep the sound out. You know what I mean? It’s those basics done right that make you want to come back. Plus, there’s something about waking up in a place that feels both distinctly Italian and genuinely comfortable – like staying at a well-traveled friend’s apartment rather than just another hotel room.

• Easy, supportive stay in Bologna – Valerie from United States – 6 October 2023 (8/10)

  The refrigerator and cupboard were stocked with items: juices, butter, 4 eggs, milk, some vegetables, granola, and a few bread products. The host was available to answer questions and replies were quick. He had a written list of suggested places to eat which were informative, where to purchase groceries and even booked a couple of reservations for me. He carried my heavy luggage up when I arrived, down when I was leaving and, when requested, he reserved a taxi for my trip to the train station. I had ample room to more around and spread out as I had the entire apartment, was able to do my laundry there and the apartment was quiet as it was outside of the center. It is about a 30-minute walk to the center which I knew ahead of time. Once I made the trip with GPS it was easy to replicate in the following days.
  
  What could be improved: As an American, the breakfast items in a continental breakfast are too thin and often too sweet for my needs. I was on my own for breakfast and did have to supplement with purchases of my own. Would have loved a paper map on hand.

  What could be improved: to, że zamówiliśmy kwaterę ze śniadaniem, a zamiast niego dostaliśmy informację, że mamy przygotować go sobie sami z produktów w lodowce i szafce ( na dwa dni dla 3 osób było to pół litra mleka, 3 małe soczki, herbatniki, sucharki i płatki kukurydziane). Wiemy co jest serwowane na śniadania w tej części Europy, oczekiwaliśmy choć świeżej kawy, rogalika i świeżego soku.
