R&B Santo Stefano Overview
So I stumbled across R&B Santo Stefano during my third trip to Bologna, and honestly? It’s one of those places that just gets it right. The hotel sits on Via Santo Stefano – which, if you know Bologna at all, is basically the street that connects all the good stuff. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Basilica di Santo Stefano (the famous seven churches complex), and the morning walk to Piazza Maggiore takes maybe eight minutes if you stop for espresso along the way.
What really struck me about this place was how they’ve nailed that sweet spot between feeling local and actually being comfortable. The building itself has that classic Bolognese character – you know, those warm terracotta tones and medieval bones – but inside it’s thoroughly modern without being sterile. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward (the staff actually remembered my name the next morning, which never happens), and my room had this lovely view over the internal courtyard that kept things surprisingly quiet despite being right in the centro storico. The beds are properly comfortable too – not those rock-hard European mattresses that leave you wondering if you’ve offended someone.
Here’s what I really appreciated though: the location means you’re embedded in actual Bologna life. There’s a fantastic little osteria about thirty seconds away where locals grab their morning cappuccino, and the evening passeggiata flows right past your front door. You can walk to the university area in ten minutes, or wander over to the Quadrilatero market streets when you want to pretend you’re going to cook something ambitious with all that incredible local produce. Parking was actually manageable too – they directed me to a garage nearby that didn’t cost a fortune, which in Bologna’s historic center is honestly a minor miracle. The whole experience felt less like staying at a tourist hotel and more like borrowing a friend’s perfectly located apartment, if that friend happened to have really good taste and a housekeeping service. At a 9.1 rating, it’s clearly not just me who thinks they’ve figured something out here.

Reviews of R&B Santo Stefano
We loved Bologna! I would actually live there! – Despina from Greece – 16 July 2025 (9/10)
The location is amazing and very safe. We walked in minutes to the center of Sienna. The breakfast was very good and the room was very clean and quiet.
A wonderful place to stay and return to. – Robert from United Kingdom – 9 July 2025 (10/10)
The host Giovanni was very welcoming and the apartment was in a perfect location, short walk to the centre. Our room was spacious and comfortable with a quiet view across the rooftops. The breakfast was a splendid array to set us up for a long day visiting museums.
Stylish B&B for Bologna citytrip – Luc from Belgium – 13 June 2025 (9/10)
Good location, 10 minutes walking to city center. Very nice rooms in stylish house. Very good breakfast buffet.
What could be improved: NothingClassy, well presented apartment in the heart of Bologna's old district. – Lyn from New Zealand – 10 June 2025 (9/10)
This was a very well presented property. Modern and tastefully furnished. The owner was helpfu and the apartment was right in the old city.l Breakfast was nice with plenty of choice.
What could be improved: The problem was parking and the apartment difficult to find. We moved our car to an on- street parking area as we had parked in the actual street but found it was just for residents. The lift up to the top floor is so slow you could easily walk it in half the time.A fabulous B&B in the old city, perfect for exploring – Yvonne from United Kingdom – 10 June 2025 (10/10)
We were made very welcome even though we weren't typical tourists for this B&B. We were family meeting up for a wedding in the middle of our stay. We were able to spend time getting ready on the big day, able to come and go as we needed. We really appreciated this, as the B&B was just 5mins walk from the Palazzo Isolano. It was also about 10mins walk from the park for our dog.
I was anxious about unloading the car but no-one seemed to care that we were double-parked for a while! The garage nearby was very tight to enter in a narrow one-way street but the owners are extremely competent and parked the car for me! It was all much easier than I anticipated. The lift was a little slow but large enough and easier than the 90 steps to the top floor. The entrance through a locked outer door from the street lead into an area where my husband was able to leave his mobility scooter safely.
Breakfast was a revelation each day… so much choice, fresh and innovative. The apartment was spotless (apart from our glitter!) with fresh towels daily.Clean, comfortable, accessible – Janet from United States – 9 June 2025 (9/10)
Very nice, clean room, very accessible to the city center. Nice breakfast as well.
We had a great stay. – Vicky from United Kingdom – 3 June 2025 (9/10)
Everything was fine.
What could be improved: The location could have been a bit closer to the town centre and not in a main road.Bologna Trip – Jason from United Kingdom – 24 May 2025 (9/10)
Stylish, well located and spotlessly clean
Quiet location, short walk to main area, breakfast is nice – Helen from Ireland – 24 May 2025 (10/10)
Lovely hosts. They do laundry for you if needed and got it back the next day. Nice breakfast choice. Very comfortable beds, great A/C and shower. Very quiet in the rooms which is great, excellent location, a little bit away from everything but this is what we wanted. 10min walk to the main area / direct 11 bus from the station. They have a lift, essential when you have heavy bags
What could be improved: Price was high for the room but all accommodations seemed to be priced high when I was booking. Would pay the price again though for the comfortable-nessWe really enjoyed our stay in Bologna and at this property. – Leslie from Canada – 17 May 2025 (9/10)
Breakfast was lovely. We enjoyed the variety and sitting with other folks at the lovely table for breakfast.
What could be improved: The location is excellent and central (close to centre and to a beautiful garden) but there is accordingly some street noise at night. We were initially a bit confused about how to access the property but Giovanni was helpful on that and on providing some good restaurant recommendations.
