Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of Bologna hotels, and the Piazza Maggiore Jungle Bijoux really caught me off guard – in the best way possible. The name sounds a bit over-the-top, honestly, but when you’re walking down Via Altabella (which is this narrow medieval street that most tourists completely miss), you suddenly stumble upon this gorgeous entrance that feels like stepping into someone’s stylish Italian home rather than a typical hotel lobby.

The location is actually brilliant if you know Bologna at all. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore – I mean, you can practically hear the evening conversations drifting over from the piazza when your windows are open. But here’s the thing: Via Altabella is just tucked away enough that you avoid the crowds of people taking selfies in front of the Basilica di San Petronio at all hours. I stayed there in September, and while the main square was packed with tour groups during the day, our little street stayed relatively peaceful. The rooms have this jungle-inspired design that could’ve been cheesy, but they pulled it off with these rich greens and natural textures that somehow work perfectly with the historic building’s character.

What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood – not just the obvious tourist spots. When I asked about good places for aperitivo, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward the usual suspects but mentioned this tiny enoteca on Via Pescherie Vecchie where locals actually hang out. The rooms themselves are well-appointed (that 4-star rating feels accurate), and I appreciated that they didn’t skimp on the details – good water pressure, blackout curtains that actually work, and honestly, one of the more comfortable beds I’ve slept in recently. The breakfast setup was solid too, though don’t expect anything too elaborate. One small thing that bugged me: the elevator is pretty tiny, so if you’re traveling with big luggage, you might want to pack light or be prepared to take the stairs. But overall, with that 8.7 rating, I get why people love this place. It’s got character without trying too hard, and you really feel like you’re experiencing Bologna from a local’s perspective rather than just checking another Italian city off your list.

  Fantastic location in the heart of Bologna streets. Comfy bed including the sofa bed. Clean apartment.
  
  What could be improved: If you are self catering then kitchen utensils seemed limited. The wine glasses were not a full set (we were only 3 people too), all different sizes. Very very minor detail, but considering you are in a foody city, you may have wanted to bring back food and a bottle of wine for the evening.
  
  Not a complaint but an awareness. If you are three adults and using the sofa bed, then you have to walk through the main bedroom to get to the bathroom. This could disturb sleep if you need the bathroom at night or if you're an early riser compared to the rest of your group. Not a problem for us as we were traveling as a family however, could cause issues for other parties.

  Excellent location and clear and easy instructions to checkin with code/app. Loft space was unique and comfortable. Host was quick to respond when we had questions. The history and wood beams were very cool. Netflix was a plus. Very comfortable sleeps.
  
  What could be improved: Washer machine doesn’t unlock on speed cycles (but maybe user error). We were able to run the 90 cotton cycle and it was nice to have clean laundry. You will need to take your trash and recycles out of the unit so add time to checkout plan. TV remote also doesn’t work well even after we swapped batteries.

  What could be improved: The 101 stairs you need to climb to get to the apartment on the top floor (I counted) was a lot and had we known, we probably wouldn’t have chosen it as we had to carry a pram up and down each time. The electronic door system was quite annoying.

  Location was ideal, right in the heart of the city centre just off the main road from the station (20 minutes) to the main Piazza. Clean and comfortable, it seemed to have everything we needed although we only used the kitchen to make tea. Bed was comfortable, and as it's located in the roof space of the building the air conditioning was much appreciated. Very convenient for restaurants for dinner and breakfast. Good communication with the owner although all done through the booking.com app. An interesting photo book about the apartment is on the coffee table. I had been concerned about using the door release system through a special website accessed on my phone but it worked well (as if by magic!). This opens the front (street) door as well as the door to the apartment. If you don't have a modern smart phone with data roaming, book elsewhere! Nightly cost reasonable (£130) bearing in mind location.
  
  What could be improved: Five flights of steps, 100 of them, was wearing when you are 'getting on a bit' and carrying cases (no lift). Mind the low beams in the apartment and note that all the windows are in the roof so the only view is of the sky!
