Phi Hotel Bologna Overview

So I’ve stayed at the Phi Hotel Bologna a few times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just gets better each visit. The location on Via de’ Fusari is pretty brilliant if you know Bologna at all – you’re right in the Saragozza district, which means you’re close enough to walk to the center but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the tourist chaos around Piazza Maggiore. I mean, you can literally walk to the Two Towers in about 15 minutes, but when you come back at night, you’re in this quieter residential area where actual Bolognese people live.

The hotel itself has this modern, minimalist thing going on that could feel cold in other cities, but somehow works perfectly here. I think it’s because they’ve got these warm wood accents throughout, and the staff – well, they’re just genuinely nice people who seem to actually care about what they’re doing. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, nothing groundbreaking but everything works properly (which, let’s be honest, isn’t always a given in Italian hotels). The beds are actually comfortable, not those rock-hard European mattresses that leave you walking funny the next day. What I really appreciate is the soundproofing – Via de’ Fusari isn’t exactly a busy street, but you know how sound carries in these old Italian neighborhoods, and you genuinely can’t hear much once you’re inside.

The breakfast situation is better than most places in this price range, though don’t expect anything too fancy. They do proper espresso (obviously), and there’s usually some decent pastries alongside the typical hotel spread. But here’s the thing – you’re staying in Bologna, the food capital of Italy, so you should probably be having breakfast at one of the little bars nearby anyway. There’s this place called Bar Saragozza just a few blocks away that does these incredible cornetti that’ll ruin hotel breakfast for you forever. The front desk folks will point you toward all the good spots if you ask, and they actually know what they’re talking about rather than just handing you the same tourist pamphlet everyone gets. Parking can be a bit of a headache if you’re driving – this is the historic center, after all – but they’ve got arrangements with a garage nearby, and honestly, once you’re parked, you won’t need your car anyway. Everything worth seeing is walkable, and the buses run regularly if you want to venture further out. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if you’re the type of traveler who wants to feel like you’re actually in Bologna rather than just visiting it.

Reviews of Phi Hotel Bologna

  • Great Location, Offensive Decor – Denise from United States – 15 June 2025 (7/10)

The staff was helpful and very efficient. The location is excellent for exploring the historic city center. Taxis can pick up and drop off in front of the hotel. A huge plus for those with early morning or late arriving flights. The room was clean and decorated with a lobster theme – fun.

What could be improved: I was very uncomfortable upon arriving in the lobby and seating area. There were multiple images of the racist Italian cartoon character Bilbolbul hung on the walls. While the character has been updated from the original, the concept and story line are offensive nonetheless. For this reason, I cannot rate Phi Hotel highly.

  • Nice hotel in a great location – Norma from United Kingdom – 13 June 2025 (9/10)

Location was perfect and although it was so close to Piazza Maggiore it was quiet
    Very nice breakfast

What could be improved: No outside sitting space otherwise it would have been perfect

  • Superb – Alicia from United States – 9 June 2025 (9/10)

The location, the restaurant and the hotel staff were excellent. The room was nice too, with a very comfortable bed. Would recommend to others.

What could be improved: The room felt a little worn-in, with a few scuff marks on the walls and stains on the carpet.

  • Very good – Linda from United Kingdom – 6 June 2025 (8/10)

    EXCELLENT LOCATION,

    What could be improved: NOTHING

  • Great location, amazing breakfast, and cozy rooms—parking’s the only downside. – Ofri from United Kingdom – 5 June 2025 (9/10)

The breakfast was outstanding, with a great selection of food and fresh cold-pressed juices. The room was very comfortable, especially the bed and pillows. The staff were all kind and helpful, and the location is perfect—just steps from the city centre. The complimentary coffee and pastries available throughout the day were a lovely touch.

What could be improved: Parking was quite expensive, and there was no room service available.

  • Lovely short stay in excellent location for the main piazza in Bologna! – Carole from United Kingdom – 22 May 2025 (8/10)

Central location, rooms clean and modern, some quirky features. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Nice Osteria next door which is part of the hotel.

What could be improved: Rooms overlooking the road were quite noisy and we could also hear noise from the corridor, which wasn't often but did wake us on a few occasions.

  • Very clean and comfortable stay.excellent staff – Pamela from United Kingdom – 20 May 2025 (9/10)

Fantastic breakfast, friendly helpful staff, very comfortable bed.

What could be improved: Erratic hot water in the shower

  • Superb – נתן from Israel – 12 May 2025 (9/10)

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at the hotel! From the very first moment, we felt the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff was incredibly kind, professional, and attentive to every request – always with a smile, making us feel right at home.

The room was spotless and well-maintained, with great attention to detail. Cleanliness and comfort were clearly top priorities.

Breakfast was delicious, fresh, and varied – a perfect way to start the day, with something for everyone to enjoy.

We will definitely be coming back, and we highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing, high-quality, and enjoyable hospitality experience.

  • I will book again in this hotel – Lara from Jordan – 25 April 2025 (9/10)

The location, the style, the cleanliness

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Great hotel, great location. – Monique from United Kingdom – 12 April 2025 (9/10)

A great hotel in a brilliant location.

The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were quirky and reasonably well equipped. A few very little things went wrong, but they were fixed quickly and efficiently.

The breakfast was varied and plentiful – roasted veg with breakfast was welcome.

    We would definitely stay again.
