Palazzo Marsili Serenity Overview
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Bologna over the years, but Palazzo Marsili Serenity on Via d’Azeglio actually surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. You know that stretch of d’Azeglio where it gets really quiet and residential? That’s where this place sits, tucked into what used to be an actual palazzo, and you can tell the moment you walk through those heavy wooden doors that someone put real thought into keeping the character intact.
The thing about this hotel is that it feels like staying in someone’s really well-appointed home rather than a typical four-star property. I mean, the ceilings are ridiculously high – you’re talking original 18th-century proportions here – and they’ve managed to blend period details with modern comfort without making it feel like a museum. The rooms have this warm, lived-in elegance that I find missing in most boutique hotels these days. Plus, and this matters more than you’d think, the windows actually open properly and the street is quiet enough that you can sleep with them cracked even in summer. The air conditioning works fine too, but there’s something about that cross-breeze that just feels right in an old Italian building.
What really sold me on the place was the staff’s approach – they’re not overly formal or trying to impress you with fancy service theater, but they clearly know Bologna inside and out. The guy at the front desk (I think his name was Marco?) casually mentioned that the best mortadella in the city is at this tiny place about two blocks away on Via San Vitale, and honestly, he was right. It’s that kind of local knowledge that makes a difference. The location itself is pretty perfect if you want to be in the historic center but away from the tourist chaos around Piazza Maggiore – you’re a solid ten-minute walk to the main sights, but you’re also right in the middle of where actual Bolognese people live and work. There’s a great little osteria literally next door, and the morning sounds are church bells and people heading to work rather than tour groups.
I should mention that parking can be a bit of a puzzle (welcome to Bologna’s historic center), but they have an arrangement with a garage nearby and the staff will actually walk you there the first time so you don’t get lost in those medieval streets. Small touch, but it matters when you’re dealing with ZTL zones and trying not to get a traffic ticket on vacation. The 9.6 rating this place has earned makes total sense to me – it’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but it delivers on the things that actually matter: comfort, location, and that intangible feeling that you’re experiencing the real Bologna rather than some sanitized version of it.

The apartment is fantastic! The location is perfect, just 4-5 minutes from the main square. The neighborhood is great and safe. The room is new, spotlessly clean, spacious, and equipped with all the amenities! The building itself exudes an old Italian charm and grandeur. Nick is very polite. I would definitely recommend it 100% for your stay in Bologna!
A terrific apartment close to everything! – Patrick from Australia – 23 March 2025 (10/10)
The apartment was beautifully appointed and in a terrific area, just 5 minute walk to Piazza Maggiore.
Niccolo met us at the apartment with the keys and clear instructions for the apartment.
Niccolo was also very helpful with restaurant recommendations.
Definitely would stay here again if we visit Bologna again.
What could be improved: Nothing, everything was excellent.Exceptional – Mauro from Malta – 15 February 2025 (10/10)
Our host Niccolo' was extremely helpful from the day we made our reservation. Our check-in time was at 23.30 but he reassured us that it was fine. He was waiting for us at the front of the Palazzo to show us around the apartment. When we checked-out, Niccolo' also securely stored our luggage on the premises and assisted us in calling a taxi for our evening flight. The apartment is ideally located near the main square but in a quiet neighbourhood nevertheless. Great find and highly recommended.
