Palazzo di Alcina – Residenza d’Epoca – Luxury Rooms – Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Palazzo di Alcina? Walking up to this 16th-century palazzo on Via Galliera, I was honestly expecting something a bit stuffy and museum-like. Instead, I found this perfectly balanced blend of historic charm and modern comfort that actually makes sense for how people travel today.
The location is honestly brilliant if you know Bologna at all. Via Galliera runs right into the historic center, so you’re literally a three-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but you’re not dealing with the tourist chaos that comes with being right on top of it. I mean, you can slip out for an early morning espresso at one of the local bars before the crowds hit the main squares, then duck back to your room for a proper rest in the afternoon. The street itself is pretty quiet at night too – none of that late-night revelry that can make some central Bologna stays a bit rough around the edges.
What really impressed me was how they’ve handled the whole “historic building meets modern expectations” thing. The rooms have these gorgeous original ceiling details and period touches, but the beds are actually comfortable (you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case in these converted palazzos), and the bathrooms work properly. The heating system is solid too, which matters if you’re visiting in winter – Bologna can get properly chilly, and I’ve stayed in too many “charming” places where charm doesn’t extend to being warm. The staff seems to genuinely know the city well, not just the standard tourist recommendations. When I asked about where to find good tortellini that wasn’t a tourist trap, they pointed me toward a spot near Via del Pratello that I never would have found otherwise.
Honestly, the 9.5 rating makes sense once you’re there. It’s not trying to be flashy or over-the-top luxury – it’s just done really well. The kind of place where you can spread out your maps and guidebooks in the morning, then come back after a day of wandering Bologna’s porticoes and actually relax. If you’re the type who wants to experience the city like you’re temporarily living there rather than just passing through, this works perfectly. Plus, if you’re planning to explore other parts of Emilia-Romagna, the train station is close enough that you’re not dragging luggage across half the city.

We spent a few wonderful nights in a 15th century palace. This experience in Bologna was very memorable. We had a rich breakfast every morning accompanied by classical music and a different dessert every day. All the staff were warm and friendly. Looking forward to our next stay.

The Palazzo di Alcina is a beautiful Renaissance villa which has been in the host's family for generations. The decor and artwork is breathtaking. It was such a privilege to be able to stay in a genuine Palazzo and to meet the hosts Maria Christina and her husband. They are two exquisite and cultured people who are happy to share their beautiful home with guests. From the first welcome to the farewell at the end of our stay we were treated with generosity and warmth by this exceptional couple. The passion and enthusiasm they have for Bologna and the artistic treasures of this beautiful city really shine through. Maria Christina provides the most unbelievable breakfasts each morning in a sumptuous room with an astonishing choice of local products, fruit and pastries. In addition to all that each day we were treated to a homemade sweet treat and gourmet dishes such as omelette with truffle and vitello tonnato. All served with care and precision by Maria Christina and the delightful Anna. Our room was a deluxe double suite and the decor was in keeping with the renaissance style of the Palazzo but with the most comfortable bed and modern bathroom. Staying here for 3 days was like stepping back into another time but with all the modern comforts we expect nowadays.
We will remember the experience for a very long time and really hope to return one day.
What could be improved: Having to leave and return to reality.A Wonderful Experience – Mikal from Canada – 20 April 2025 (10/10)

If you want to step back in time and feel like a royal, this is your place.
Palazzo di Alcina is conveniently located in central Bologna, a few steps from main streets and monuments. You can easily walk to restaurants, stores and IL Duomo and Cathedral.
The rooms are rented by the owners who live in a wing of the palace and are always attentive to every detail. Rooms are confortable and every detail is taken care of.
Luxury surrounds you everywhere and breakfast is luscious and beautifully presented.
Thank you for making our stay, magical.Perfetto. There’s nothing more to add! – Cynthia from United States – 7 April 2025 (10/10)
Everything was stunningly beautiful and elegant. A fabulous morning palatial-style feast served by candlelight with period music and fresh, homemade pastries. Kind, professional and perfect service. The palace was immaculate, and so peacefully quiet at night for sleep. Very near the towers and main square, as well as the music and medieval museums. Very walkable.
Superb Stay! Step back in time and enjoy. – Jp from United States – 5 April 2025 (10/10)
This palazzo is spectacular and unique. It is luxuriously appointed throughout and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back into a time of glamour and opulence. It’s like being in a beautiful painting, albeit an exceptionally comfortable one! Your hostess is gracious and attentive. Maria Cristina takes care and pride in the maintenance of an extraordinary guest experience. Breakfast is outstanding and beautifully curated. The beds are ultra comfortable. Everything was truly perfect.
