Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to JR Hotels Bologna Amadeus on Via Marco Emilio Lepido, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s in Borgo Panigale, which if you know Bologna at all, isn’t exactly the postcard-pretty historic center most tourists aim for. But you know what? That turned out to be exactly why I ended up liking this place more than I thought I would.

The thing about staying here is that you’re actually living like a local Bolognese person would – the neighborhood has this authentic residential feel where you’ll see people walking their dogs in the morning and grabbing coffee at the corner bar (there’s a particularly good one about two blocks down that does proper cappuccinos, not the touristy stuff). The hotel itself sits pretty quietly on the street, and honestly, the rooms are solid for a 4-star. Nothing fancy, but the beds are comfortable and the AC actually works, which… well, if you’ve spent a summer in Emilia-Romagna, you know that’s not always a given. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful too – they gave me actual directions to places instead of just handing over a generic tourist map.

What really works about this location is the practicality of it all. You’re about a 15-minute bus ride from the centro storico, and the bus stop is literally right there. I mean, I could see it from my window. The area around Via Lepido has everything you need – there’s a small market where I grabbed some of those incredible mortadella sandwiches (Bologna’s real specialty, forget what you think you know about “bologna”), and parking was never the nightmare it becomes closer to Piazza Maggiore. The neighborhood gets quiet at night, which was perfect after long days wandering around the city’s porticoes. I actually slept better here than at the fancier place I’d booked in the center the previous year – no late-night revelry from study abroad students, just the occasional gentle hum of traffic that somehow felt comforting rather than disruptive. The 7.7 rating feels about right to me – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it does everything well without trying too hard. If you’re the type who wants to experience Bologna beyond the tourist bubble and doesn’t mind a short commute to the main attractions, this place gets it right in a way that those generic chain hotels near the train station just don’t.

  Convenient for the airport, although unfortunately there was no direct bus due to roadworks just outside the hotel.
  Staff were helpful and friendly.

  What could be improved: Air con unit was very noisy and rooms need updating as they are very tired looking.
  The restaurant (next door, linked to the hotel) was the only place open in the locality to eat on the evening we stayed – food was very salty and service poor. If you can get out and go further afield, I would recommend doing so.

  We had a small layover before a flight in the early morning hours. The hotel arranged a taxi for us and opened the hall for coffee/tea.

  Everything was great, the location is close to the train station (excellent connection to other cities), the room was cleaned every day and towels were changed, breakfast was good (just the same menu every day)..

  Everything was nice and clean and all the staff was very friendly and helpful! The breakfast buffet was stupendous!! So many choices and it all tasted great.

  Breakfast was really good.
  We chose this hotel because it was close to the Unipol Arena and the airport. But we were surprised to see that there were quite a few restaurants nearby and that it was really easy to go to Bolgna centre by bus from there.
