Hotel Roma Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Bologna over the years, and Hotel Roma hits that sweet spot where you’re right in the thick of things without feeling like you’re sleeping in a tourist trap. The location is honestly what sold me first – you’re literally a two-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, which sounds too good to be true until you realize it actually is true. I mean, you step out the front door on Via Massimo D’Azeglio and you can practically smell the tortellini from Osteria del Sole (though honestly, that might just be Bologna in general).
What I really appreciate about this place is how they’ve managed to keep that classic Italian hotel charm without making you feel like you’re staying in your grandmother’s house. The rooms have character – you know, those high ceilings and solid shutters that actually block out the morning light when you’ve had one too many Aperol spritzes the night before. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood, too, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about getting to the university area, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward Google Maps – he told me which bus to take and mentioned that the 20-minute walk through the porticoes is actually nicer if the weather’s decent. That’s the kind of local insight that makes a difference.
The building itself sits on a relatively quiet street, which is clutch because Bologna can get pretty lively, especially during university term time. You’ll hear some street noise during the day – it’s a city center, after all – but nothing that kept me awake at night. Parking is… well, it’s Bologna, so good luck with that, but there’s a garage nearby if you’re driving (though honestly, why would you in this area?). The 8.5 rating makes sense to me because it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything works the way it should. The WiFi is solid, the breakfast is better than the usual continental spread, and the beds are actually comfortable – not always a given in European hotels, let’s be real. If you’re the type who wants to be able to stumble back from dinner at Da Cesari or grab morning coffee at one of those tiny places locals actually go to, this is your spot. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s exactly what you want in Bologna.

Reviews of Hotel Roma
Fabulous location, lovely room with balcony but dated decor – Catherine from Australia – 17 July 2025 (8/10)
The location of this hotel is fantastic, right near Piazza Maggiore. The hotel was extremely comfortable if rather dated. The breakfast selection was good
What could be improved: The "scrambled" eggs were appalling. More like chopped up omelette that had been sitting out from the beginning of service. At a hotel like this either the eggs should be freshly Madde or made to order. The waitstaff also never asked me if I wanted milk in a jug for my T and were often slow at offering coffee. The hotel decor is also quite dated and could really use a modern touch. We also couldn't shift the air-conditioning and it was far too hot overnight to open the balcony doorsExcellent – Dan from Romania – 13 July 2025 (10/10)
Big room, comfortable bed.
Breakfast had little selection but overall good for the price range.
What could be improved: During the night there was some noise from nearby locations (maybe from their restaurant as well, not sure).Central, clean and pleasant. – Stephen from United States – 11 July 2025 (9/10)
It was right in the middle of everything. Staff were great and I really enjoyed the hotel – it's an old building and to some it might seem dated but I really enjoyed its vintage charm. Everything was spotless and well-kept so age wasn't a problem. Decent breakfast too.
What could be improved: Apparently they changed out the bathtubs for shower stalls in a more recent renovation – I kind of wish they had left those there!Centrally located, comfortable hotel – great for a short stay – Marta from United Kingdom – 8 July 2025 (10/10)
Amazing location, very quiet room.
When we return to Bologna, we will most definitely stay at Hotel Roma. – Francesca from United Kingdom – 7 July 2025 (10/10)
The room was beautiful and big, as was the bathroom. The balcony was lovely. It was so lovely to sit out there and hear the bustle of the streets and see Piazza Nettuno. Breakfast in the hotel was terrific: a great selection. Staff was very helpful.

In the ♥️ of Bologna, Hotel Roma is all HEART. – Susan from United States – 1 July 2025 (10/10)
Fantastic location!! Walking distance to all Bologna had to offer:)
Every member of the staff was exceptional. Personable, helpful, and kind about how little Italian we spoke.
The front desk staff went above and beyond on our check out day! Storing our luggage and continued to help us past our checkout time.
The wait staff at the restaurant greeted us each morning with a smile and a pleasant, “buongiorno”Overall. An excellent place to stay. – Neil from United Kingdom – 28 June 2025 (8/10)
Ideally Located
What could be improved: Breakfast fruit options could have been better. Had to request coffee from waiters.Would recommend lovely hotel and staff. – Loretta from Ireland – 26 June 2025 (8/10)
Central location, staff very helpful particularly the night receptionist we were very late checking in and he was very friendly and helpful.
What could be improved: Everything was really nice would highly recommend. Bit noisy at night trying to sleep but we were based at the front of the street.
