Ottavo Portone Overview
You know what struck me first about Ottavo Portone? The name literally means “eighth door” in Italian, and honestly, that’s exactly what it feels like – this hidden gem tucked away on via dell’unione that you’d walk past a dozen times before realizing there’s something special on the second floor. I mean, the address says “piano secondo, interno 9” which basically means you’re climbing up to what feels like a secret apartment above the street buzz, and that’s actually part of the charm.
The location is seriously perfect if you know Bologna at all. Via dell’unione runs right through the heart of the historic center – you’re literally a two-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore, but more importantly, you’re in the middle of what locals call the university quarter. The morning sounds drift up from the cobblestones below: students chatting on their way to lectures, the metal shutters of cafés rolling up, that particular echo that narrow medieval streets make when a Vespa putters through. The building itself has that weathered brick façade that screams “I’ve been here since the 1400s,” but inside, well, they’ve done something really thoughtful with the restoration.
What really gets me is how they’ve managed to keep the old-world Bologna feeling while making everything actually work for modern travelers. The rooms have these gorgeous original beamed ceilings – and I’m talking about real, centuries-old chestnut beams, not some fake rustic nonsense – but the Wi-Fi is lightning fast and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a freight train. The floors are this beautiful terrazzo that’s probably been there forever, worn smooth by generations of feet, and it stays cool even in July when Bologna turns into a brick oven. Speaking of summer, the windows actually open (revolutionary concept, right?) and you get these lovely cross-breezes that make the evenings bearable without cranking the AC all night.
The whole operation feels family-run in the best possible way – not chaotic or unprofessional, but personal. Check-in was this relaxed conversation about where to find the best tortellini in brodo (spoiler: it’s not where the guidebooks tell you), and they actually hand-drew little maps showing the quieter routes to avoid the tourist crowds around the Two Towers. They seem to really know their guests’ rhythms too – like, they figured out I was a morning person and would quietly leave an extra espresso cup outside my door before the breakfast service officially started.
The breakfast situation deserves a mention because it’s properly Italian – fresh cornetti from the pasticceria downstairs, real Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma that’s sliced to order, and coffee that makes you understand why Italians are so snobby about it. No buffet steam trays or sad continental nonsense. They serve it in this lovely little room with windows overlooking the internal courtyard, so you’re eating while listening to the neighborhood wake up around you.
Honestly, the 9.5 rating makes complete sense once you spend a night here. It’s not trying to be a luxury hotel in the flashy sense – it’s just deeply, authentically Bolognese, and after a day of wandering the porticoes and stuffing yourself with ragu, that’s exactly what you want to come home to.

I booked the flat for my mom and her friends. They told me the place was fantastic, and Lara was an incredible host. She even had some cold drinks for them on arrival. They were very, very happy with everything. Thank you, Lara!

Ideal stay – Katerina from Greece – 6 October 2024 (10/10)
The property was clean, comfortable and functional exactly like on the pictures. Very well equipped, there was even coffe, sugar and milk. Close to the center, 10 min walk at the max with beautiful cafe und restaurants near the area. The addes value of the house is the owner, LARA, very friendly, positive and helpful. She gave us loat of local tips.
What could be improved: Some streets nearby may seem a little strange to someone, as the view of so many young people sitting down on the pavements is not that common. Most of the University's schools are in this area. This does not affect the house in any way.Perfect choice for your stay in Bologna – Габриела from Bulgaria – 26 July 2024 (10/10)
The apartment is extremely cosy, clean, spacious and has everything that you would need for your stay. The location is very close to the city center and the host was incredibly kind. She gave us plenty of suggestions about where to go, what to see and she even offered us to keep our luggage safe till it's time for our flight. Would definitely choose to stay here again if we visit Bologna in the future. 😊
Fantastic! – Tania from Sweden – 9 May 2024 (10/10)

Great apartment! – Charles from United States – 21 April 2024 (10/10)
We really enjoyed our time at Ottavo Portone while we were in Bologna. The apartment is large and airy with lots of windows. Lara greeted us and helped us up the stairs with the bags. (yes, it's upstairs, but totally worth the effort!) The living area was huge with a comfy sofa and chair as well as a roomy table with ample chairs. The little kitchen, very typically Italian, was perfect for making breakfasts and snacks. And I'm certain it would be adequate for other basic meals, but with so many amazing restaurants in Bologna, why eat in!? We appreciated having the washing machine and the drying rack. Bedrooms were also large and comfy. Lara was a joy to meet and was very responsive to any question. The walk to the main piazza takes about 15 minutes.
What could be improved: Not much could have been better. The shower is a bit tight, but not unusual for Italy. We would have loved some brighter bedside table lights.Amazing! – Emily from United Kingdom – 14 April 2024 (10/10)
Wonderful!! The flat is stunning and so well situated. Lara has thought of everything and it is clean and very beautiful.
