You know what struck me first about Opera Residence? The entrance – it’s tucked into this gorgeous old building on Strada Maggiore, and honestly, I almost walked past it because it blends so seamlessly with the historic architecture. But once you step inside, there’s this perfect balance between respecting the bones of the building and creating something that actually feels modern and comfortable.

The location is really something special, and I mean that in a way that goes beyond the usual “great location” nonsense. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore – I timed it because I’m weird like that – but more importantly, you’re right in the heart of where Bolognese people actually live and work. There’s this fantastic little osteria called Al Cambio just around the corner that locals pack into for lunch (the tortellini in brodo is ridiculous), and you’ll hear real conversations in dialect, not tourist chatter. The street itself gets busy during the day since it’s one of the main thoroughfares, but it quiets down beautifully at night – I slept with the windows open in October and only heard the occasional Vespa.

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to genuinely know their city. The woman at check-in didn’t just hand me a generic map; she asked what I was interested in and then marked specific spots with actual reasoning. She steered me toward the covered market at Mercato delle Erbe for morning coffee instead of the touristy places, and she was absolutely right – I ended up going back three times in four days. The rooms themselves feel thoughtfully designed rather than just decorated, if that makes sense. Mine had these beautiful exposed beams (the building dates back centuries, apparently), but the bathroom was completely modern with fantastic water pressure. The bed was firm in that European way that I’ve learned to appreciate, and there’s actually enough storage space, which… let’s be honest, is rare in historic Italian hotels.

I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t the cheapest option in Bologna, and if you’re looking for a pool or gym, you’ll need to look elsewhere. But the 8.9 rating feels earned rather than inflated. It’s the kind of place where small details matter: the breakfast includes proper local pastries from a nearby bakery, the WiFi actually works throughout the building, and when I needed restaurant recommendations for my last night, the evening desk clerk called ahead to secure me a table at a place that was supposedly booked solid. That’s the difference between a hotel that cares about ratings and one that cares about whether you’ll remember Bologna fondly. After four nights there, I can tell you which category Opera Residence falls into.

  Centrally located and a 10-15min walk to the main square. The apartments are beautiful with all the necessary facilities to make your stay comfortable. The customer service is great and they are very responsive to any questions you may have. They went out of their way to celebrate my birthday! The family and kids were thrilled with our stay.
  
  What could be improved: Just a tiny note, that if people are staying longer than 2 nights, a change of towels would be lovely. But that's an opinion.

  The location is excellent, right in the center, a few minutes' walk from the Towers. We were in the TOSCA studio. Parking is provided (for an additional fee of 25e per day). We received all the necessary information before arrival by email, with clear instructions for arriving by car. It's clean. Although it is on the main street, it is quiet for sleeping. We didn't use the kitchen, but I can see that there are plenty of dishes and equipment.

  This place was just amazing. Very good location, a lot of shops near by and restaurants. Big, bright, quite room, very well equipped kitchen, big bathroom. And quite important, very comfortable bed 🙂 And a small, but really helpful and beautiful present from hotel, was a shopping bag, it was very nice. Defiantly we come back to the same hotel next time. Bologna is a very beautiful and quite city.

  It was really easy to find and the self check-in instructions were essy to follow. The location is convenient. Our apartment was spacious and clean.
  
  What could be improved: The apartment was right next to the entrance door to the building. Some other guests returned late and it was very noisy when the heavy door shut. Also, you can hear when people walk and talk on the stairs.
